Tieing off the Clew of the Main Sail.

Post by adudinsk »

I am not sure if there is any "RIGHT" way to tie the main sail clew to the back of the boom, but the manual shows this:
(see attachment)

WHen I got the boat it had a MUCH longer sheet used, and was wrapped several times around the boom, before going to the cleat.
Not sure why.. not sure if it even matters.
Maybe more secure, maybe they didn't want to cut the rope down..

How do others tie it off? Like the manual? Or are there better ways?

Thanks again..

I’m not sure “better ways” is correct.

However you successfully get it done, is a good way.

The manual was basically set up for those who have little to no experience, to be able to sail their Mac.

Some may differ with me, but if it works, and it does not create other difficulties, it’s a success :D

It is that length, because it had to be for the deep reef.

At full main and no reef, there is a lot of rope left over.
At 1st reef, there will be less
At 2nd reef, there will be just enough to do the trick, reaching all the way from the aft of the boom, through the new clew position and back to the horn cleat.

I get it now!

Also.. the main sail has a Shackel at the Tack , should I use that, or just attach the tack grommet directly to the mast?

Sure.. give me a day or so to get to the boat.
What it is ... is there is a shackle about 2.5" (snap one) through the sail's grommet.. should I use that and clip to the mast.. or run direct to the mast? I think these are Doyle high performance sails.. not the stock ones. Thats for connecting the Tack to the bottom of the mast.
(quick connect mod maybe?)

Run the sail up the mast without securing the tack. Then see where the tack wants to be for a smooth leading edge. That's the space that needs to be taken with hardware, of whatever sort works best.

My main sail had slides added to the original bolt rope. The whole tack area looks strange, until I figured out that I needed to change where the tack secured to the boom. It was pulled way too far forward, leaving wrinkles and bags in the bottom of the sail.

I drilled a new hole in the boom, added a thin pin and twisted shackle, and not it sits nice and flat. For a worn out old sail, that is. But no more wrinkles and bags at least. The tack termination ended up moving back by about the same amount that the sail slides spaced the sail back from the boom.

Big surprise, that. :|

If memory serves, I think I used that to get the boom up another inch. Was hitting the dodger with Highlanders ridged vang install.
If he's mounted that track another few inches fwd, would've cleared the dodger.

OH,.. so I should pitch the aft end of the boom up a bit so its not level.. then the shackel will level out the sail?
