Humminbird upgrade

Post by dlandersson »

I'm currently using a Humminbird 787c2 (PO) that's nearing the end of it's service life. I think it's at least 10 years old.

I'm thinking seriously about a Humminbird upgrade - the 5 inch (i'm thinking the 7 inch is two big). Anyone done a Humminbird upgrade? I don't trust the "no problem" observation of the Bass Pro S. sales guy. 8)

Mine is also 10 years old, although still working just fine. I'd be curious what you decide.

Mine is starting to show it's age (787c2 is 15 years old, screen sometimes flickers, depth jumps around when it's warming up, one time the GPS reported no cable - reboot fixed that).

I'm leaning towards the Humminbird 410220-1 Helix 5, CHIRP Di GPS G2. A 797C2 is for sale on Ebay - but it's 10 years old, and not a lot cheaper than a brand new unit and has no warranty.

What I've learned so far is that Humminbird is still using the exact same power cable - so I can use my perfectly fine existing one. The new unit has the GPS set up internally - so that's one less thing to worry about. The transducer (comes with it) has the depth, water temp, etc. So all I have to do is replace my current one (on the right rear transom, I suspect yours is the same)

The screen imaging of the lake bottom is much improved - kids will really like it. And the fish images also. :)

I read reports of problems with the SI (side imaging). I don't need it so I'm skipping it.

I got a Garmin V65, it wasn't my first choice as I have always had Lowrance but it looks great, good size clear screen and the discount made it cheaper than the Lowrance with the same features. Very happy with it so far
