One job led to another

When replacing wheel bearings today, I noticed this on a tire.

Now I need to replace a tire also. I am glad I caught this in time.

Yikes! That could have made for a long day. As usual, the tires came apart before the tread was worn out...

If you are doing all that, might as well replace the studs and lug nuts. I started doing the same thing, in the end I replaced the U bolts, bearings, raises, seals and tires (wheels included). To save time I cut the U bolts off with a saws all. I couldn’t find anyone that would turn the rotors to resurface them.

Good question.

My intentions are to check for date codes on both tires and the spare tomorrow.

After discovering the tire problem, I stopped for the evening.

I was thinking the same thing. If one is bad from age, the other(s) is(are) likely not far behind. Mine came with the original tires from 1999 ( :o ) and the added second axle was only a couple of years fresher. Those two are spares now, but it got four new tires and galvanized wheels the second year I had it. Plus new disc brakes (rear axle only) and coupler and lines, lighting, bunks, and so on. But I digress. :|

I checked two of the three tires (single axle with one spare).
The spare is dated August 2016.
The bad tire is dated July 2012. Way overdue.
I have not looked at the other tire yet.

Good job! I ignored my tires, bearings and brakes (surge brakes here) for 2 years. Ended up replacing all the cables, shoes, bearings, and tires....lesson learned!

I don,t do a lot of trailing like some guys on this site do as I mostly slipped my boat for the first 4 yrs , my trailer is 2008 in 2014 I removed my tires & flipped them on the rims as they were wearing on one side due to my boat being loaded heavy most of the time & I got another 2 yrs out of them but as I say I don,t trler much so my trailer is pretty much in new shape
before my trip to haul the boat over the Rockies to Vancouver Island BC I re-adjusted the bearings after inspecting them & replaced the wheel seals , rebuilt the brake caliper,s due to the fact one of the piston boots was cracked there fore exposing the brake pistons to water & poss. corrosion , the brake pads still had 60% wear in them to go but due to their age 8yrs old I was not taking any chances of them becoming dislodged from the brake shoe pads due to poss corrosion between the pad & shoe weather they r glued on or riveted to the pad shoe ! I would never have forgiven myself if I ran out of brakes coming down the Rocky Mountains ! so the brake pads were replaced with the highest heat/load application i could find , I also replaced all my truck rotors, caliper,s brake pads & parking brake shoes & all caliper brake flex lines as they were due anyway
I replaced my old bias ply tires with 2 new radial tires an a extra radial tire & rim giving me 2 spare tires
Anyways I was loaded to the gunnels coming down these Rocky Mountains going thro AB & BC & I can tell ya even with a 9600# tow package & trk some times auto trans manually put into 2nd gear to keep that load from taking control of my descent I could sure smell them brakes getting hot & sayin to myself Geez was that ever a smart move ! :)
And if u do a lot of trailering then Radial tires r the only way to go !, I went with commercial trailer tires way above my rating as I knew there would b times I would b doing 130km/h so I did not want any :o
Bottom line this is not maintenance schedule that should cheap on if u do a lot of trailering or plan a big trip !
Oh Well my Rant is over now lol
