New mast questions/sugestions
Well, my mast is bent, I think from the side stays being too tight. I am going to order a new mast predrilled for my 2002x from BWY. Any suggestions on upgrades to add or how to make cannibalizing the old mast easier? Are rivers ok for fastening things to the mast?

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
I don't think you can bend the mast, on account of the side stays being too tight--at least, not if they are both too tight. Most likely, the baby stays were not in place when you tried to raise the mast, or the mast took a hit while it was in a horizontal position,
How severe is the bent? You might try straightening it out first before ordering a new one. The transport fees are going to be exorbitant

Funny you should bring this up...
I have bent my mast on the
the exact same way in the exact same place. It is from the mid shrouds being too tight and this is a known failure point.
I found a 28 foot mast off ebay/craigslist for 100 bucks and am moving everything over now. Consider you may be able to save significant money.

Pinched right at the spreader bases - a known failure point.
The original poster is right. the 26x mast is too light and can pinch and then will fail.

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
I wonder if you could cut it and sleeve it. I've heard people repair masts this way.

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
Check with BWY see if they have any mast sleeves for a
as they were a split mast each section was 12ft spliced at the spreaders to make 24ft & could b split & stored in the cabin , I have one in my storage facility & I offered it to someone on this site but he never got back to me so I guess he either fixed or replaced his mast

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
Ah the unknown sailor lol
well for future reference for all u
sailors out there here,s what an
mast splice looks like & it should work on an
Mast as I,m sure they r the same
mast splice is 18" long

2 3/4" Wide

3" high

the flat base is approx 1 1/4" wide these r all O/D Measurements , can someone recheck there
inner measurements & confirm ?
When I extended my 24ft
mast to 28ft I bought an bent
Mast from my dealer & cut off an 16ft section & when I found out he also had an
mast splice in stock I bought it also just figured it would b valuable to someone one day lol as at that time I had no intention on moving up to a
LOL
Anyways If Roger was able to buy these mast splices for his
there has to b someone out there making them ! ??
J
PS I,m gonna make a separate post for Mac Mast splice so as for future reference just to make it easier for anyone in the future

John
I did a detailed cross-section drawing of the
mast, and it's probably still in a post here some place. But I can look for it tomorrow in case it doesn't turn up otherwise.

The 19 was such a great boat - best 19 foot sailboat made - and that mast splice was one of the great things about the 19. The mast stored inside the boat in it's own pocket!
Why make the T22 - just bring back the M19

Section is (obviously) not fully dimensioned, but includes the dimensions relevant to the interior sleeve discussion.

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
Hi Tom
I can tell u this they r a very snug fit
remember my measurements where just approx but pretty close enough to give someone an Idea of what they r looking for & I bet they r still avail from whoever makes these masts
J
PS Also ur mast would b a lot stronger with this mast splice inserted at the spreaders as it is about 3 times thicker or more than the mast it,s self I,ll need to get that spec

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
I'll bet it is a tight fit. I didn't measure the flats on the sides as precisely as I should have, but I don't see them accounted for on your sleeve, so that slight increase in thickness would certainly account for much of the close fit.Highlander wrote:Hi Tom

And I agree that putting that sleeve in there would help strengthen the mast against crushing from the spreaders and inner stays as well as excessive bending moment in that area. Might have to cut a mast in half to get it in there, though. But if the OP's mast is already damaged, then it might be a feasible option, and would allow some careful body and fender work to get it back into shape in that area prior to inserting the sleeve.

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
You can make your own sleeve out of wood or even fiberglass. If you make it out of wood, saturate it with epoxy.

Re: New mast questions/sugestions
While we are talking spars, I'm still big on getting a traveller on my X, the above cabin entrance option is very appealing but that entails moving the main sheet about 5 feet down the boom towards the mast.
The question is how would one go about strengthening the boom so it doesn't break under the extra load of moving it closer to its pivot point?
