Transom transducer
If I put the depth transducer on the transom, as on a power boat, will the transom near the centerline always be in the water? Does it lift clear on certain points of sail? I am not very aggressive when sailing...15-20 degrees of heel is plenty for me.

Re: Transom transducer
So I mounted mine on the starboard side of the transom. Never had any issues when heeling. I'll post a photo tonight when I get off work.

Re: Transom transducer
There is a point where the transducer is no longer touching the water, but when you get to that degree of heel the last thing you will be looking at is the sonar.

I'm too lazy to go outside and take a picture but this is the reference I used to mount mine.

Yeah, that picture will work real good - when you get to heeling over so far that the unit in that picture is no longer in the water then the last thing you will care about in that moment is what's on the depth sounder or the sonar because your probably not going to be on the boat anymore at that point - you will be swimming.

Re: Transom transducer
This is where we have ours and works very well sailing and low speed under motor, although depth readings get intermittent sometimes at higher speed under motor - I believe it might be from transom water cavitation?

Re: Transom transducer
Mine is mounted diametrically opposite eodjedi's starboard mounting.
As BOAT said, if you're heeling enough for the transducer to be dry, then sonar is not something you will be looking at.
My current Garmin transducer is about nine inches long, maybe longer. My concern was if it would interfere with the port rudder.

Re: Transom transducer
Mine's mounted in the same space. We get good readings under sail and at full power. We tie stern to the beach a lot and ours has gotten a little banged up. When I mount a new one I'll try to make something so that it can kick it up, but not kick up from the force of water. I'd love to hear if someone already has this figured out.

Re: Transom transducer
I mounted mine to a piece of rectangular black starboard with a large center hole that overlays the existing ballast valve. It is fastened with the same bolts used to hold the ballast valve in place. I just removed the bolts, overlayed the plate on the valve, and re-caulked and replaced the bolts with a set that was 1/2" longer. The transducer came with my Raymarine chartplotter and does both depth and speed. It has a snap-hinge mechanism and a mounting bracket that will allow the whole thing to fold up in the event it strikes something. It can then be snapped back into place. It has never struck anything and has never been snapped closed. It also has never has come out of the water during healing (that I know of anyway).C Buchs wrote:Mine's mounted in the same space. Re: Transom transducer
My Garmin transducer folds up, and out of the way. My old one did not, but the new one is quite long, so it has too.

Re: Transom transducer
I mounted my Lowrance transducer on bottom of the ballast fill valve hole using the bracket for a trolling motor mount. Never had a problem with it coming out of the water.

Re: Transom transducer
If u have a GPS with up-dated charts u should b watching that also if u r in shallow area,s unless u r sailing up-wind ur D/B or C/B will only b down 2-3ft & only one rudder would b of concern shifting sand banks & reefs & rocks r a concern but if in deep water should b able to nav, around them depending on traffic ? , while sailing u should not b relying on a depth sounder remember if u r heeled 20% in 10ft of water ur depth finder is gonna bounce back & forth from 10-30ft if u have a wide beam transducer if u have a narrow beam transducer it,s gonna read 30ft on a 20% heel in 10ft of water
