Pedestal Hatch Mod with Hinge and Latch Lock?

Post by BOAT »

It's really rare for me to actually START a thread but maybe once a year but for me to start TWO threads in ONE day!!??!! That's apocalyptic. It must be the end of the world, I can't seem to get you guys exited about anything today so I thought maybe a picture of a mod might wake up some folks. I actually did this mod many many months ago and never posted it but since no one seems to be communicating much on the site today I thought maybe you guys needed it:

Here is the Pedestal your all familiar with and the obligatory factory 'Hatch' that comes with it:

Image

Or Is It?? :o (Ooooohhh magic!) So here we see THE HAND from nowhere turning the latch and what will happen??! :

Image

The 'hatch' magically hinges open!:

Image

Ooooh! your all impressed! ? :o . . . right? ` ` ` ? :? . . . . . . (wow, tuff crowd)

Okay, that's all I got - I figure your all just out trying to outrun the hurricanes or the internet must be broken, (in 80% of the world at the same time), otherwise I can't explain why the activity is so low - maybe your all out sailing. That would be nice - if so - where are the pictures?? Huh? (maybe it IS the end of the world! - aahh! :? )

I like it. I've been trying to think of way to put a dry storage area in the cockpit for phones and car keys. I'm leaning toward putting something like this in the side of my pedestal.

Yeah Don, really strange - usually there are a lot more people around - it's been like a ghost town here all week. I'm sorry that Ponaldpe's boat is not made that way. I wonder how they made it? Another guy in another post said his pedestal was not that way either - he said his was fallen over to the side!

Strange things going on these days.

Can you guys guess what the electronic devices are that you can see in that hatch? (This is sort of like solving the daily crossword puzzle). HINT* use the enlarge picture option to solve the puzzle.

I think poor old BOAT is going stir crazy, a bit of cabin fever or as he live is Cal beach hut fever :P

Not sure whats going on with the pedestals, I thought they were all bolted from underneath onto the cockpit floor, but I live and learn obviously not.

Trying to ramp up to sailing season, alas the rain hasnt stopped in direct contradiction the forecasts that we are heading into a extreme fire season, not sure how you light a fire in sodden earth with soaking wet trees and green green grass, but thats what the fire authority is telling us, so it must be true, just hard to believe when you look out the window.

Here is a thought, maybe they are too busy looking at the computer model on the screen to actually look out the window and see what is really happening.

But I digress, damn those pesky pedestals, maybe they have a drinking problem??

Mea maximal culpa, "[choose one]!!

I've been yrounder in the Land of Venture.

It's an exemplary pedestal you have, and I don't say that to many men...and quite photogenic. Moreover, there are pix. My Xpedestal mods remain mostly-undocumented-as-yet.

Okay BOAT, I will say it. That (as most of yours) is an extremely professional mod. It looks so clean better than OEM.

What's that toggle switch do?

I likes this one. I likes ALL of your mods. I'm not sure why, but who cares. It looks good. The hinges, the finishing of the glass opening, it's fantastic.

PLUS FIVE! My Uncle has a house in Atalanta and another house on Marco Island - so he has been trying to sell the house in Atlanta for years and 3 month ago he finally got a buyer! They take over his house in Atlanta in a week so he already had all his stuff packed up and ready to move to Marco Island a week ago. So uncle watches the news Saturday and says: "Why are we moving to Marco Island??"

Oh Well :(

If you look closly at the picture (enlarge it) you can see that inside the pedestal is a little grey box with the words RAYMARINE on it - that is 'boats' wifi network - that little antenna makes all the nav and pilot devices available on remote steering dongles and iPads and iPhones and it works on *iPhonies too, (*Androids). The black box on the hatch is the rotating mast compensator control box - you need access to that to calibrate the wind direction sensor on top of the mast, and the little switch cuts power to said compensator because it draws power even when the wind indicator is not on. (It's like a 'phantom power drain'), so I turn it off when the mast is down.

The hatch is watertight, and the latch is the standard key operated tumbler panel lock, but I removed the key lock and put in a plain lever operator (most panel key lock kits come with both) but if you were the type to leave your boat unattended in questionable marinas the key lock is a good idea.

Only the ignition and tilt and electric ballast valve have wires so there are not a lot of wires in the pedestal, (It's because of the Garmin and RayMarine backbone) - I have both backbones in the battery compartment tied together so all that stuff runs off one cable - all the stuff in the pedestal sends it's communications down one cable that goes to the backbone in the battery box. I still need to do a little cleanup on those two screw holes leftover from the factory - right now i just have a screw in the holes.

I can put on that stuff if you think it needs it - (uhmm :? first your gonna need to tell me what "hasp" is :P ) Does it need "hasp"?

Can someone tell me what "hasp: is? (New kind of wax, or a waterproof material, right? it's not an edible project so I know it's not the standardized field ration seaman's portable all-purpose meat (SPAM) although that might be a good place to put combat rations. I dunno :| if you think it needs it i will install. Is "hasp" a locking thing - I can do that too. I need to look it up on google, oh, wait, I got kicked off google because I was not politically appropriate, I will need to ask someone.
Ever since I got de-funded by Google I am required to do this:

I always wonder about the hasp and lock on my companionway door. It would be easy to rip it off if someone really wanted inside. Does it deter a casual thief from breaking in? There isn't really anything worth stealing for a non-sailor, but some people will steal anything.

That said, a hasp and lock on that Lexan panel might cause more trouble than it saves.
