Lee Cloth
Anyone use a lee cloth in the aft berth? On a long leg to Dana Point I was taking a nap and almost cracked my head on the battery box last season when the wind picked up. We had a lee cloth on all the side berths in my dad's boat because the berths were so narrow but I assumed that it would not be necessary on the aft berth in the MAC because it's so wide. Have any of you guys had any trouble sleeping underway or am I just getting too fat to stop rolling around like a walrus?

For the same reason tractors/trucks with sleepers have restraint systems, so when the driver nails the brakes or hits something, you have some chance of not flying out through the windshield.

Re: Lee Cloth
I dunno, maybe I'll just try a big pillow, but if I start to roll again I think I will need a lee cloth down the middle of the bunk. Geeze - when i was a kid i slept out in the cockpit in a sleeping bag and only rolled onto the floor once. Now, I could never sleep in the narrow berth along the side across from the head - I would be on the floor as soon as the boat heeled to starboard. Even when I am laying in the cockpit now i lay on the low side to keep from rolling onto the cockpit floor - I hate getting old.
Oh well, I was just wondering if any of you guys ever get rolled around in the aft berth.

I just store all my stuff on the starboard side of the aft berth and I sleep on the port side. I make sure the sail bags are in the middle, when I roll just get stop in them.

See: How to make your own leecloth. But for "rolly weather" I have one of these big stuffed sharks from the Ikea Markdowns Room in the forward bunk. They're about three feet long. They had crates of thempaul I wrote:Umm please. Explain to the ignorant among us, such as myself. What is a Lee Cloth????

That's only used for storage on my boat. Way too cramped under there, and the step where the ballast vent was on olderBOAT wrote:Oh well, I was just wondering if any of you guys ever get rolled around in the aft berth.

Re: Lee Cloth
I have that too, but I was talking about the narrow bunks on the other side of the boat - when I was a kid if it was raining I got a bunk inside and it was narrow like that so my dad rigged a lee cloth on it so I would not fall out when we were crossing the Sea of Cortez at night. Back then he would stay up on the helm in all weather gear - this big yellow jumpsuit thing with a hat. He had several lee cloths for the bunks - when i was a kid I just thought all boats had them. I did not know any better.Tomfoolery wrote: Should'a got an- I use the table

I think the shark is a good idea, I will look for one of those sharks.

Re: Lee Cloth
Sadly, I believe that the Ikea "BLÅHAJ 402.980.27 Soft Toy, Shark, 39.25 Inch, Stuffed Animal Plush" has been discontinued, which might explain why there were stacked to the rafters in my local IKEA's big Clearance Room many months ago, when I grabbed mine. Unless I am mistaken, they were originally part of some sort of limited time program whereby some portion of the proceeds went towards the Save the Children Fund and UNICEF. Unfortunately, it seems some folks are now selling that old stock at pumped up premium prices on Amazon, eBay and the like. There was even some online petition asking IKEA to bring them back. In the meantime, about the best deal I could find was this one on Amazon for $34.89 with free shipping (compared to its original price of $19.99 at IKEA---though I think I got mine half-price or less in that Clearance Room)

Re: Lee Cloth
Never heard of a "Lee Cloth". Learned something today.
How about just sleeping on the Lee side. Or "Roll with It".

Re: Lee Cloth
Lee cloth, not to be confused with lee board which is a like a center board one on each side of the boat, the one on the windward side gets lifted and the one on the lee side gets put down

Thank you for clarifying that!
