Replacing windows in a Dowsar dodger (with video)

Post by Tomfoolery »

I thought I'd document my first foray into repairing some of the old canvas that came with my boat. The dodger, in particular, needed some TLC, as it and the bimini live in the great outdoors. The side curtains of the cockpit enclosure don't have anywhere near the mileage on them, and seem to be fine.

Anyway, the windows were very cloudy and crappy looking. The canvas, too, is a bit dirty and tired, but still functional, so I sourced a used sewing machine (non-walking foot, though :( ), put in a heavy needle, bought some heavy thread (V-92), 30-gauge roll vinyl (thread and vinyl from Sailrite), and gave it a shot.

I haven't put the dodger on the boat yet, as I need it off to do some of the prep work that's in-process, but the finished product came out pretty good. If you don't look too closely at the stitching. :P

6-minute video, edited down from 35 minutes, which is all it took to do the last of four windows.

And a 40 second time-lapse, shot at the same time without interruption, and slowed down to about 1/4 speed (2-1/2 minutes) since it moved a bit too fast, as I just wanted to try the time-lapse function on my phone. Held to a tripod with rubber bands. High-tech meets low-tech. :D [cue Yackety Sax music]

If nothing else, it might encourage others to try it. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, and the results are worth it.

Now on to some other canvas work. Like a new helm cover that actually fits the wheel and engine control. And maybe a StackPack type sail cover. 8)

(And maybe some time on a Stairmaster - yikes!)

I don't even have a dodger...but if I did and it was in need of repair I would probably be stalking you. Good job Tom! You have some great video editing skills too. :)

Thanks, but I'm just a noob at editing. And sewing.

To close the loop, here's the before:

This was one of the photos in the broker's listing. The windows only got worse from there.

And here's the after:

I have a front window for it that my FIL repaired with new vinyl a few years ago, but I usually don't put it in unless it's cold. On a trip in the summer, I usually use the separate screen panel along with the full enclosure (with side and back screens plus roll-up vinyl windows), and at my dock, I don't usually use either. In fact, I prefer no dodger at all, as it makes deck access easier, as well as visibility.

Now that I have a little confidence, maybe a new sail cover that matches the canvas, and/or a helm cover that actually fits, would be the next thing to take on. 8)

It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Next up is the little window in the bimini that allows me to see the Windex at the top of the mast. It's so gnarly I can't see anything through it. :P
