New steering cable length

Post by Mcadieux »

Just ordered the upgraded rack and pinion steering for my 2000 26x. BWY said the package was everything I needed to replace my frozen steering. I havent removed the old cable yet, but this new cable looks way to small. I get limited time to go work on the boat so I don't want to habe an issue when I finally get a day. Is this the right size cable?? I expected it to be like 10ft not 8ft. I cant picture this fitting.

When replacing the steering cable on my X, the length I ordered was 11 feet. 3 feet will not work.

Its actually 8ft not 3 sorry lol. How tight was your 11ft cable? I can't find any pics or videos of someone doing the replacement. This cable just seems really short to make the bends needed.

5 years ago I changed mine on a 1998 :macx: . I ordered the UFlex Rotech 11' steering package, I found it to be too long, maybe a 9 feet would have been better.

Apparently not all X'x are created equal, some have the outlet for the steering in a different position, some closer to the transom some further away

Early X's have a 12 foot cable and later ones a 8 foot cable

Lots of info here http://shop.bwyachts.com/category-s/317.htm

The 12 footer is perfect. Just roll the excess cable in the wheel helm housing. I think that's what you call it.

I do believe when I changed out mine (also a 2000 26x) the old one was 8' long. I replaced it with something longer because I wanted to route it slightly differently, but I think an 8" version will fit as long as it is routed just as the old one is.

11 feet worked very well for me. The way I routed the cable, it worked out just right. It was longer than the original but I don't remember by how much.
