Valterra gate valve

Post by Mac26Mpaul »

My gate valve rod has failed. The one below looks like it would fit. Does anyone know if the bolt holes are likely to be spaced exactly the same as the 10 year old one from my boat?
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VALTERRA-CP- ... 2519351088?

I realize its probably not the steel gate model, but I doubt that matters does it?

Or maybe this model which has a screw on cover which might be handly for stopping barnacles growing on my gate when I leave the boat in the water ..

Those will both fit. Macgregor used a (what is here in the States) standard RV waste gate valve. I replaced my :macx: 's valve with a plastic one from Valterra with a 6 foot cable instead of a handle. You should visit Valterra's website and check out their products, I think they have an extended handle model.
I don't know about the :macm: , but my :macx: 's valve's 4 machined mounting screws were threaded into the fiberglass, and the valve was 3M'd on. It was hard to remove, some of the gel coat pulled off with the glue, and some of the threads were damaged in the 'glass. I fixed the gel coat, replaced the 3M with a large rubber O-ring, and longer SS bolts & T-nuts. Been fine for 3 years, and the next time will be easier to change.

Thanks for that info, Im losing a bit of ballast water while underway, I have resealed my air outlet and put a ball valve it, but because you cant get all the air out of the tank when the water goes in a leaky gate valve still lets some water syphon out.

Thanks Cpt Smitty

Yep, mines the same, it came out easy, and I pried the base off with a couple of screw drivers, didn't take the gel coat off mine, but showed me a lovely bit of new boat underneath, kind of sad actually, seeing the state of the boat around it which has been baked in our Florida type weather for the last 10 years, and owned by a lazy guy that doesn't do too much polishing/waxing type activities...

I did see the ones with the cable but I cant see them anywhere here (anywhere I have looked online anyway) and they will no doubt be a fortune here. I dont mess with the ballast once its full anyway so I reckon one of these will be fine.

Mike, mine had been doing that for ages and when I took it off I found that one of the rubber seals had a tear in it, so thats probably all you need, athough the whole thing is cheap anyway, so might as well just replace it..

cheers
P

Mine has an extended handle. It's only a foot or two, but it's long enough that I can reach over the helm seat and pull it just before I hit the trailer (vent already open). Or if I want to drain it on the fly, to make it easier to load on my super steep ramp. There is an eye strap screwed to the stern just above the valve to act as a guide for that longer rod.
