Seen in OZ...

Post by kmclemore »

So we're in Australia and I've seen several Macs. Does anyone know who these two belong to?

Also saw this interesting Mac copy, a Mach 28, made in Australia by "Mackman Boats"... gee, lets not be TOO obvious, shall we?

In his defense, his name is actually Mackman. :)

Yeah, I read that when researching the boats, but that's one heck of a coincidence!

You just dont want to see the price ticket on a Mach28, they want around $65,000 Au for a second hand one around 10 years old. A new one was around $90,000!

Gee I wonder why they didnt sell many and went out of business when Macgregor 26M were about 1/2 the price including import and customs inspection fees

They were selling the moulds for them not long ago, I think they wanted around $3500 Au for the moulds.

The issue seems to be in OZ that while we are the country of leisure, anything to do with leisure is priced out of this world, its not unusual for a new 16 foot caravan to retail for around $60,000.

Seems that most Australian retailers wants to make a years turnover out of every sale,

I had both BWY web site up and the Queensland Macgregor dealers site side by side, the OZ dealer was over twice as expensive on just about everything and on some was 3 times more or greater

Why? The Mach 28 is a re-designed :macx: by David Lyons for Synergy Yachts, the only licensed Australasian MacGregor dealer at the time, who had Mackman Boats build it for them locally. It was introduced when MacGregor stopped building the :macx: in favour for the :macm: in 2004 so Synergy still had a Mach to sell :)

It was way over priced and failed as a business venture.

But Mike, you have to take into consideration that the cost of business is considerably higher here. Wages in a boat factory here would be double was was being payed in the Macgregor factory I'd say, the cost of raw materials is higher, as is power etc. If Macs had been built here and sold at Roger's prices, they would have been selling at a loss I'd think.

Even at 50K or whatever it was for the basic boat, Macs represented a hull of a lot of boat for the money, considering many Aus made runabouts sell for somewhere near that. Actually, no other boat on the Aus market could offer that much for 50K!

Kevin

Most people come to Australia to look at the Barrier Reef, Uluru, the Sydney harbour bridge etc etc. Now, I don't have a problem with your sightseeing priorities per se, however you may realise when you get home that you might have missed some sights!

My wife and I travel the world, and we make it a point of trying to meet up with as many Mac people we can find. We have met, and gone sailing with a few. We really try to make Mac get together's wherever we are in the world. Knowing Kevin & Jana, I'm quite sure they are seeing much of OZ, along with making Mac contacts, with him being the moderator at large.

I do wonder though, can that large mustache be used as a weather predictor :?: Wet: it's raining. Moving erratically: windy. Frozen: it's snowing.

Only kidding Kev. :D

Kevin, if you like classy food, ask the locals whereever you are, where the best pie shop is, and go grab a nice curry or chilli pie, not much to beat a good curry or chilli pie, except maybe a really peppery pepper steak pie 8)
