etec issue
So after running at high rpm I believe I ran out of fuel and switched tanks and motor has not run right since ,replaced fuel filter which was really bad and replaced part of fuel line but not the bulb ,with run 5k rpms then lose power ,seems to run ok up around 2k but like I said get on plane and really soon after it loses power ? Any ideas ???? Is it possible its not pumping enough water ? The new clear fuel filter is full of fuel when it stalls and loses power ? Do not get any warning lights ?

Re: etec issue
If the problem only started after running a tank dry i.e. motor stopped from fuel starvation I would suspect crud, gunk or contaminated fuel was sucked up from the dregs in the bottom of the tank and have clogged an injector or the fuel return line.
Have you been running ethanol fuel?
The only real way to know would be to do a fuel flow diagnosis.
BTW don't be tempted to use a fuel add-in injector cleaner they do nothing in the real world.

Re: etec issue
I know a bit off topic, but I was going to buy an Etec but got scared off when I saw so many 3 or 4 year old ETecs for sale for wrecking.
Got me thinking, what the hull could go wrong in 3 or 4 years that would make a $13,000 motor not worth fixing

Here they were used to replace Tohatsu's on commercial vessels and the pro circuit fishing fleet so maybe just flogged into the ground. Please provide a link to a source of these engines so we can look them up.sailboatmike wrote:I know a bit off topic, but I was going to buy an Etec but got scared off when I saw so many 3 or 4 year old ETecs for sale for wrecking.

A quick fleabay search found 0 ETECs being wrecked but plenty of Merc's though the youngest was 8 years old

To each his own. Statistically speaking, one will find only negative results when performing a "search" No one will bother or have the time to post positive comments on-line if their ETEC works flawlessly.sailboatmike wrote:

The problems with the ETEC's, one might say, is: being heavily coputerized and serviceable only by a qualified mechanic (one of the "elect few") , people will have a much higher chance to resort to the Internet or to complain and ask for on-line assistance when their engine fails to work as it should. By contrast, if an old Johnson started acting out as noted above, the owner (or friendly neighbourhood mechanic) will quickly dismantle it and fix it--no reason to even mention its failing on the internet.
The ETEC owner discussion board is a case in point: pretty arrogant as though the ETEC specialist held a direct line to the Evinrude Saints or somethin' because "they know what you don't"
Besides, a 3-4 old ETEC would be under warranty still, and I doubt that any user will chuck it as "wrecked" instead of having it factory-servicerd for free, despite all the hasssle that such action would entail

A quick search on Ebay - in fact the first three Etecs that came up are for parts / wreckingkadet wrote:Here they were used to replace Tohatsu's on commercial vessels and the pro circuit fishing fleet so maybe just flogged into the ground. Whilst Im no big fan of Mercury, over here they would outsell Evinrude 20 to 1 or more so I would expect to find plenty more Mercs

Obviously your not from Australia, we are lucky to get 12 month warranty on outboards here, many new ones are sold with 6 months, My Tohatsu kicker has 3 years IF you take it to a Tohatsu dealer for service AND service it every 12 months regardless of how many hours its run

Obviously. Neither is Bahama bound.sailboatmike wrote:

But you're right, Mike. One has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of having any type of outboard. From a certain viewpoint, a simpler, cheaper, easier-to-service engine is preferable to the sophisticated ETEC.
Like I said, to each his own

Re: etec issue
I think it boils down to maintenance with fuel being top of list ,I ran fresh fuel but like I say fuel filter was really dirty ,Is there another filter besides the obvious one ?

My ETEC in Brisbane Oz came with a 3 year warranty the new ones have 5 and Yammies would out sell anything here 20-1
The first one in your list is a fully serviced running motor the others are not 3-4 year old the closest is the 175 (5 years old) and being a wrecking company is probably an insurance right off. As a dedicated outboard wrecking company if you peruse their store you can find any brand you want.

Re: etec issue
Yep that really sounds like fuel flow restriction so a blockage in a line if it was an injector it would be rough through the rev range. But without being able to hook my laptop up and diagnose the fault codes it is just a guess sorry. If you are mechanically inclined you could try flushing the fuel lines and the high pressure pump. This is old spanner work no fancy computer tools neededbahama bound wrote:I guess its gonna be a trip in for service ? It runs great up to about 3k
As for fuel filters there is a paper element filter under the cowl and sometimes an aftermarket external filter with some with clear bowl.

Re: etec issue
How do I flush pump ? Like I said the first clear filter stays full during the stalling issues at high speed !
