We have basically had to refit just about everything on that $9000 26M we got - over a year ago! Thought we'd finally gotten her ready and now we are fist fighting with the rigging. I was swearing like a sailor (Can't say I am one, since I can't get the fricken boat in the water) yesterday.

So...is there any Mac sailors in Hawai'i who would like to come out to Ewa Beach and help us tune this damn thing?

So I don't know any Hawaiian (and feeling very inadequate at the moment...), buy my son just got stationed in Hilo on the Big Island with the Coast Guard. He's loving it out there!
We're making our plans to head out there to visit him. Hope you get the rigging worked out soon!

SPECIAL NOTE: It really isn't that complicated. Don't let it get the best of you! You can do it! (Seriously...take a look at how many on this forum do it! Even Canadians can do it!)

Forestay - set length to get the mast rake correct (Do you have a headsail furler, by the way?)
Upper shrouds - set full tension against forestay (these are the critical tension measurement where you need a Loos gauge)
Lower shrouds - tension as needed to keep mast shape (mostly straight, very slight bend) while tensioning uppers

That's the Reader's Digest version, and yes, there is a little more to it than that. But not much... There is a very good explanation in a link provided in many of the posts on the subject on this forum. A little searching will discover it and you'll become becalmed.


For those who call our boat small and are unsure if they could make it across...we've been watching the video logs of LeaLea (search "cruising lealea" in Yootoob). They're in an Albin Vega 27 and have three logs of transpac trips. And they're not really all that good at sailing! (But we are really enjoying following their trips!) Yes, I realize that our boats are lighter weight than the AV27, but they can drop their mast too! It is deck-stepped! But mostly, just neat to see that it is possible to safely cross the ocean several times with a small boat, a hand-held GPS, a VHF with GPS, and not much else. Watching their exploits has done a lot to give us confidence.

Yup, got a furler

Just got a Loos gauge today, after the fail yesterday.

There is a very good explanation in a link provided in many of the posts on the subject on this forum. A little searching will discover it and you'll become becalmed.

Believe me, I've been on this forum searching for far, far too many hours. Our biggest problem came when we were trying to attach the furler - we heard a big "pop!" and sure enough, it broke the damn trunk deck again. We just patched it from it (apparently) happening to the PO, took the plates off, bought a new mast base plate (because we thought that was the problem), etc, etc.

So now we understand why the PO had installed 1/8" metal plates under the base plates, blocking the removal of the daggerboard. We're going to do something similar but notch the plate so the daggerboard can be removed.

Anyway, we'll get it - it's just been a frustrating experience.

So I found the link...go to pages 45 and 46. You don't have a backstay if I remember correctly. This has been passed around in here by many. JudyB posted it again not long ago. She's also a great resource for sail amd rigging tips!

Thanks! That helps - The only problem with it is we don't have a backstay but we'll get it...eventually.

Just take ur time & u,ll git her done , have u considered extending the footprint forward by adding a piece of s/s flat plate to the mast base brkt
U,ll be enjoying the boat & doing this soon enough
