Russ, that SeaTow page come up No Results Found...am I missing something?

I would guess that that means there is no automated radio check system in your area.

I thought it wasn't working, but then I remembered there is no SeaTow up here. Just TowBoat US. So I punched in Boca Raton (where my in-laws boat), and sure enough, it popped up with a bunch of SeaTow locations, all using channels 26 or 27 for automated radio checks, all the way down to the keys. But it would be nice to have that here. Radio checks, that is.

We are slowly working on our 26M that we got last year (finishing the house took priority, so she has been sitting). Being the first trailer sailer we've owned, we're wondering: What do you guys use for through the deck cable to your vhf? Raising and lowering the mast seems like maybe a connector similar to the connection to the mast head lights would be good but we can't seem to find any.

You can always call another boat or if nothing else call the Coast Guard.

I think calling the Coast Guard for radio checks hacks them off. Calling another boat would work. Then switch to another channel.

The seatow radio check thingy isn't everywhere. Pity. They use the old RadioTelephone channels.

Ive NEVER confirmed my XMIT function by calling the CG on Securite to report a large floating log as a hazard to navigation on Westport bay...in 2016


You can do a quick Radio check off channel 9/16 if you ask two talking boats nicely at the end of their conversation.

You can also confirm your XMIT function using your backup radio.

You can do an automated radio check on channel 27, if you are close to a CG station that uses it.

Trust me, call the CG for a radio check is not going to thrill them - especially if you don't use the correct language.

I called the CG once on the landline (cell phone) when I was very close to my overdue time on my FP, and my friends had called me in.

I was really apologetic, and the very nice Admiral Lt at Woods Hole refused my apology, saying...Sir - if all boaters filed plans like you, we would be out of the Search Business and in the Rescue business, which would be great. We love boaters like you.
