Mast and standing rigging

Post by Bertil Rafting »

I just bought a 26M and like it to be a better sailor so I am changing the standing rigging to syntetics 5 mm diameter Hampindjan dynex 75 and will safe over 1 kg high up. I will also buy a carbon mast and safe another 11 kg high up.
It will sail ca 5-10% faster and the mast raising will be a lot easier.
What do you think? Have anybody done the same?

Might be cheaper to get some good quality cloth instead or inclusive if you've got money to burn. :)

Unless you are racing for money I would not change to carbon fiber and synthetic rigging. Carbon fiber has no tolerance for dings and nicks, synthetic rigging will not last as long due to UV deterioration.

The standing rigging I gonna use is not detoriated from light or sun. It weighs only appr 20% compared to a steel wire rig and is much stronger than steel. It is also very easy to splice as it only have 12 strands. The quality I gonna use is made on Island and used by the fishing boats there. See Hampidjan on the net. It is made of Dyneema, prestretched and heattreated. See Dux 75. Low creep and so on.

I find it very interesting that we have come full circle back to rope rigging. My plan is to keep the wire rigging and make a spare set of 5mm that will be much easier to keep on board. I hope to find a M17 -22 mast so I can keep the split m19 mast below also. I am going to test by replacing my backstay since I need a shorter stay for a tensioner and my mast stands fine without a backstay. My dinghy I will re-rig the stays and the halyards with 5mm, way overkill but I can't see grabbing onto anything smaller. I have been very impressed with the new line since I switched to spectra fishing line.
