Second Motor(Kicker) on 26M

Hey Dave at "8 Inventure".

just wondering where you got that excellent outboard mount from - it looks strong and also apears to have a heap of travel.

Just toying with the idea of a kicker and checking out info on this forum.

Also noticed "MDeane" was using wot looked like a 5 HP LEHR propane outboard on his 26M and I was wondering how that went! Propane can get around some of the fouling up/stale fuel problems associated with infrequently run auxillary (kicker) outboards.

Another motor option down here appears to be the 5.8 HP Parson 2 stroke - at 20 Kg (44 lb) and AU$1070) it looks pretty good - any one out there using these?

I posted on this before how much I am in love with my little sail pro 6 ,I could see setting auto pilot and crossing to bimini at 5.5 mph at less than 1/3 gph ,plus it charges the batteries at 5 amps .sips fuel but my drop bracket has 12 inches of travel and that's just not enough ,in the keys or calm water it is fine but I need it to drop little more and also raise little more. I did not have any cavitation but if I got into some rougher water it might be a issue and also its hard to get I out of the water or else the foot and prop sprays underway .i think with a etec 90 it is a great combo .

I don't know what kind of outboard mount it is, I don't see any writing on it. It has a set of heavy springs on it so that raising and lowering the motor is easier, and it can be locked in 3-4 different positions. A lot I see are either up or down only. I have no idea what it came from. I have a whole pile of sailboat stuff here... There is another thread on the Venture forum here that would explain how I ended up with this sickness. I kept buying whole sailboats and other boats for parts for mine. It kinda got out of control... Then I finally moved up to the X so I keep adding things to it.

I would recommend doing the kicker mount mod the way I did by cutting the access port. it does make it easier to mount the kicker, and it is handy for running other wires for future mods (solar panel, other things ). Although I can't take credit for the idea, I found another member did it this way so I followed his steps. It is really easy, I recommend a Roto-Zip tool to cut, not a jigsaw or sawsall...too much vibration. The cover is cheap at west marine. I also think I might stuff MORE foam in there when I get done with everything...there is more space for it, can't hurt.

My motor is a 2003 tohatsu 8hp. Came with a boat, I sold boat, liked motor so much I kept it. When I got the X I was already thinking about adding a kicker but was a afraid to cut at first. Then only downside to my motor combo is the 50 Honda is 4 stroke, and the tohatsu is 2 stroke...So currently I would in an emergency have to dump a bit of oil in the petrol and shake it. I would like to eventually get a 4stroke, say maybe 6 hp if I can trade the 8HP one day but the 8 runs so well I hate to get rid of it

I would not advise propane, but thats just my opinion that its a PITA and can be hard to find fuel in certain areas... you will never get a straight answer to gas vs propane....it just ends in fights and name calling lol

I would add the kicker...it can either be handy when you have engine problems, or a place to store the dink motor...win win

Here I mounted the brkt temp on my baywalker 10 it has 5 height positions

first drop is 3"
second drop is 5 1/2"
third drop is 8 1/2"
forth drop is 12"

Hope this helps u all out the design is such that the height up & down could be easily extended another 6" I,m sure with-out much effort

I made an emergency kicker bracket for a Suzuki 2.5hp. It mounts in place of the swim ladder on our 26M, using the swim ladder brackets for the mount. The boom vang is connected between the stern rail seat and the kicker bracket to adjust the height of the bracket. The starboard rudder needs to be down to clear the kicker. With no wind or current, full ballast and loaded down for a 10-day trip, the Suzuki 2.5hp pushed us 3.5 knots at about half throttle. Full throttle didn't make the boat go any faster, just made more noise.

As a saftey issue, I don't think it is a good idea to remove the swim ladder unless there is another ladder connected to the boat. If someone goes overboard, it may be imposable to get the person back
in the boat. However, they could use the swim ladder if it was there and they were able. I am 80+ years old, and went in at the dock trying to help a female bring her boat to the dock. Her knot slipped, and in I went backwards. Could not lift myself out, but was able to use swim ladder to climb back into my boat. Just my opion.

I believe it is required for our size of boats @ least in Canada anyway u must have a fixed boarding ladder not a portable one
