Halyards?

Post by Mcginn »

Hello, new owner of a 1974 v222

I've motored around a couple let times but haven't raised the mast yet. Hoping everything's in order to sail but it looks like I may be missing a few little things.

Should my mast head have two blocks? One for the job halyard and one for the mainsail?

Also, if anyone lives in SoCal I would love some help setting sail or at least some advice on the rigging. I live in Van Nuys and usually go over to Ventura harbor to put in. If anyone lives in or around LA and has a little time to show me the ropes I'd be happy to provide lunch and a case of beer. Thanks!

Good to see another 22 owner...I have an 82 Mac 22 so if you need any pics of the way anything is set up let me know and I could forward them to you. Too far away to join you for a sail but boat is in my shop if you need any pics of any of the rigging.

New 22 owner: Yes, two blocks, one for Main and one for jib. Go to Resources tab on this site. Find Manuals and select Venture 21,22,23. Pull up owners manual. It will give start to finish instructions for getting you new yacht ship shape. We owned 1972 V-222. Would sail from Cabrillo Beach to Avalon and drop anchor for a week at a time. Kept her for five years. Lived in Northridge. Trailered from Ensenada to British Columbia. Felt sorry for slip bound boats. Loved Ventura and Channel Islands marinas. Do not skip sailing out to Anacapa. Lots of tide pools at low tide. Found her a new owner and bought V-25. Check out San Fernando Valley Yacht Club. Mostly trailer sailors. Lots of great folks there and they will give help and advice. Not sure when they meet. Think they are on Facebook. Fair Winds and Full Sails.

Wow thanks for all the support, I will definitely look into sfv yacht club.

I've looked at / read the manual several times. I also bought the book fix it and sail which was great but didn't give much specific info for our rigging ( I assume because it's model specific) and got very in depth about outboards with which I'm already familiar (I'm pretty decent with any gas engine)

Anyways, the diagram of the masthead rigging in the manual only shows one block that I see for the job halyard? At least that's all that's labeled.

Maybe I will try to post some pictures so you all can take a look at what I've got.

Thanks!

Eric

Thank you! Seems like I'm missing the larger block for the jib. I also see that one of the two screws attaching the mainsail halyard block on the masthead is broken off. Looks like the head snapped off, should I drill out the broken screw and replace it?

Unless it has a furling jib like the FF2, which has it's own internal halyard and doesn't use the boat's jib halyard. Yours may have been retrofitted.

Can anyone point me in the direction of getting a hand setting sail the first time? I've been launching out of Ventura but I can trailer anywhere from long beach to Santa Barbara.

I ended up adding a block to the forestay shackle at the mast head. Worked well.
