Man Cave

Post by jrcanoe »

I like having my 19 in the back yard. While boating this past summer I spent almost no time below. Now that it is in the back yard I have taken a nap, surfed the web, listen to tunes and read. I found a 600 watt ceramic heater that will work with my 750 watt inverter. It hasn't been cold enough to really test but I had to shut it off after about 5 mins when it was 45 out. With my 2 batteries I think I can get about 2 hours run time on the heater. I put the boat in at a dock right after I bought it so didn't get any mods or repairs done. I have a kicker bracket to mount, radio to put in and need to repaint the bottom.

I love having the boat in the back yard as well
Today I installed a flexible water tank under the aft berth, not done yet so I can spend some time
tomorrow with the wiring. It's funny how a 2 hour job can take all day :D
I also have a job on the brakes and bearings when the weather is nice.

Man cave. grunt grunt

Why don't you just plug the heater into an extension cord? 600 watts into 12v is 50 amps at 100% efficiency. I bet after 5 minutes your batteries were dead. Check their level.

I do have an extension cord run to the boat and will use it in the yard and shore power at the dock. But I can use the inverter and heater at anchor.

I think if you do the math, you will see inverter and any heat device will only run for a few minutes before killing the batteries. 12v batteries just don't hold that much energy.

For heat, I have a small Mr. Heater runs on 1lb propane bottles. Only used it once, but it heats very well. Nothing produces heat better than fossil fuels.

I second this.

Mine's docked in the back yard winters, but have to retrieve from the anchorage in Tsehum Harbour next week so can relax and not worry about storms. It does make a nice man cave, but, oh, do I have to clean the hull, before starting on the drydock season upgrades! Still, there's always skiing to while away the worst of the cold before the zephyrs of Spring wile us back to the sparkling waves. 8)

OMG ... So good reading this ... And I thought I was the only one :D

So far I've spent far more time on dry dock (home lol!) than on the water! ... Just love optimizing the single handed setup and pack-up ... have got it down to 40mins 8)

All the best
