Has anyone got better top speed with a bigger pitch prop on a similar boat?
Update: Now with PICS. Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
Re: Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
Hi, Just put a 2015 etec 90 on my
. The dealer put on a 14" 11P. At WOT I get a top speed (GPS) of 16.9 knots @5600 rpm. This is on Lake Winnipeg approx 700' ASL the hull has rough ablative bottom coat and the boat is blue, as it should be.
Has anyone got better top speed with a bigger pitch prop on a similar boat?

That sounds low for a 90 hp. I get 15 kts with a Honda BF50, though it is an X, not an M. And that's with no ballast, but three adults onboard, with the mast up. And the hull is white.
Are you running with no ballast?
And the engine, according to Evinrude's web site, is rated 90 hp at 5000 rpm, and tops out at 5500. Sound like not enough pitch in the prop. And the boat is loaded with ballast. That's what it sounds like, at least.

I have a 50 hp non-Bigfoot Merc, and I get 15-16 knots if I remember to empty out the water ballast. I have an X, a white hull, and Lake Michigan water, probably far faster than Lake Winnipeg water.

I have got as high as 20 knots with the 60. Mast up, in the ocean (salt water) two people on board and ballast empty. 17 to 18 knots with the 60 is pretty normal for us at WOT depending on the chop. 17 all day long with a full ballast tank.

Topping out at 5600 rpm when it's rated up to 5500 rpm suggests the rev limiter may be coming into play here, too.

How many people on board? Ballast in or out? [ I would assume "in" by speed but your revs are too high]. Mast Up? How heavy is your boat loaded? Radar, solar panels, heavy duty mainsail? What was the sea state?
While I have an
FWIW: Don't go over 5500 RPMS Period. Lower your throttle if it climbs above 5375.
Lastly double check that prop size & pitch.

P.S. Since you inve$ted in a new E-tec this year. Consider a bottom rehab next year: Bottom sandblast/ strip, Epoxy Barrier, New Harder ablative x2, minimum.
Re: Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
Yes I see that people with the
get significantly greater speed than any reported by
owners. I am running it mast up sails on under cover/furled, ballest empty, doger, Bimini under cover, dagger board up sailing rudders up, premium unleaded, aluminum prop, trim down. Yes lake Winnipeg waters tend to be a bit thick especially at the south end. Two crew on board~350lbs, solar panel flat behind bimini, light chop, full drinking water, empty head fenders stowed. No radar dome, whip antenna.
Had a 2012 exec 60 got 13.4 knots(gps) with that in similar conditions and set up except I had a SS prop on the 60
I tried a 14x14 SS prop on the sixty but it had lousy acceleration and would only hit 4600 RPM.
My dealer is willing to let me exchange props I was thinking of a 14x13 3 blade and SS
I was hoping with greater speed the hull would wash it's self clean of the ablative there's plenty grit in Lake Winnipeg water

Re: Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
Yuma,
My 2014 Etec 90 on my 2002 X with rough anti-fouling gets the following:
Ballast in: 20mph at 4,800 RPM
Ballast out: 24mph at 5,000 RPM
Prop is 14x11x4-blade, aluminum
Those numbers are pretty much regardless of how the boat is loaded or which way the wind is blowing.
Some things to look at:
Mounting height of the motor: is the prop in the right position vertically speaking?
Do you have the wedges installed? I owe the OP a photo of my wedges. (Jaz, sorry I have been out twice since my promise of the photo...first time I forgot to take the picture, second time I forgot my cellphone). Also, just have a look and make sure the motor is really in the fully down position, and the positioning pin is in position number one. There are six positioning holes that can set the angle of the motor with respect to the transom, and hole number 1 is the lowest one which tucks the prop in closest to the transom.
Three blade or four blade prop? Are you sure it's a 14x11x4? Your speed and RPM numbers sound more like a smaller diameter and/or lower pitch prop. I believe Bahamabound runs a 14x15x4 prop with his Etec90, a prop which mine couldn't swing anywhere near the max rpm.

Any chance it's a Pontoon Series 90? They have a higher reduction ratio (slower prop speed), which means larger diameter prop and possibly higher pitch, too.

Re: Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
When we hooked my etec up to the computer ,he said push throttle all the way foward and when I did it showed throttle plates were only opening 80% ........have not done anything about it yet ,I assume its something with the linkage ? I think I'm turning a 17" pitch prop ????
Re: Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
So I see above that Boat has a
and is getting far greater numbers with a etec 60 than I ever got with my 60 and still better thAn I am getting with a 90. WTF over! Can salt water and sea level atmosphere make that much difference?
I got a 3 x 13 7/8 x 15R Evanrude "Viper V4" SS from the dealer today I will put it on this weekend and report back.

Jaz here is the photo I said I would get for you. You can see tops of the aluminum wedges between the motor mounting bracket and the transom, sealed with an amateur dealer caulking job. The tops of the wedges are the thick part; they taper down to about 1/4" (from memory, I didn't actually measure).

Re: Opinions on this etc 90 for my 26x
Thx Starscream,
those look exactly like what I bought.
Progress to date, I managed to sell d Merc 60 EFI.
I was very honest with the buyer about all of the hassles I've had with that POS. I gave him a pretty heavy discount from thebluebook. Good riddance
I built an a frame scaffold . Since the motor is still in the back of my truck I'm going to try out the scaffold on a dagger board rope replacement.
Then I'll go about the business of strapping the motor into place.
Although I'm half inclined to try and smooth the bottom and refinish. I have more time than money lately, and it's awfully hot to be boating. I'm going to do some research here on smoothing the bottom by some methods that I have access to. Sandblasting doesn't seem like one of my choices, but I figure I can get after it with a large disc on my drill. I have an air compressor so I figure I can spray on some new bottom stuff, but I'll have to make sure I understand all of the ins and outs first.

Took the
out on the weekend with the above mentioned prop got 18.4 Knots (GPS) @ a max 4750 RPM WOT. Will try a 13 " pitch this weekend.
