Re: mac tri maran
Huh. That's not nearly as horrifying as it sounds. I first wondered if there'd been any actual engineering to the sizing of the akas and determination of ama buoyancy, but then I realized one could simply flood the ballast tanks in any kind of weather and be just fine.
It's been talked about numerous times here, and I guess Mad Mike did it with Zeno's Arrow as well, but this one looks pretty good.

Looking at it, it appears to be either a 26D or maybe a 25... Can't see the back of the cockpit closely enough to tell if it has a lazarette or not. It isn't an S... My brother and I have been discussing exactly thus...kinda funny to see it. I've been eyeing a mastless hobie on one of my driving routes for several months. Hmmm...

Re: mac tri maran
So the math says that the Hobie 16 amas are about ideal for keeping a MacGregor 26 level. However, those akas are way to small to stand up to any real weather. Looking at my boat, it's not at all clear where good hard points for akas would be. I think I'd take two single 2" AL pipes bent to go over the deck and mount them port and starboard with pillow blocks, and then use a system of dyneema stays to keep the akas in position fore to aft. That way there's no compromise of watertight integrity below the deck liner.

One of my ideas when I get my Mac 19 is to glass in two pvc tubes on the head front and back walls that will accept the lower half of two windsurfer masts. I thought about ridged aluminum tube akas but decided against them. This would let me take a canoe, kayak or dinghy as an ama. I would have to be easy on port tacks but I could scream along on starboard.

jrcanoe :
Best to check the engineering on that. There will be a lot of stress on the tubes, probably more than the PVC can handle.

Hobie 18 hulls.
If you are insane to try this project.
The cost in time and materials would by you a nice used catamaran.
This project done right is a steep cycle of upgrades. Rigging tangs chainplates Ect Ect.
Plus the boats not going to go all that much faster except maybe down wind with a death wish. And it ain't going to motor fast. Save you money and get that pogo thing if you want to go fast. Get the options package that includes the blond French chick.

I think and hope the pvc end caps would blow first since it will be mostly a compressive loading.Y.B.Normal wrote:jrcanoe :

Re: mac tri maran
ok thanks,
I think the MACmaran (or triGREGOR) would have one really MAJOR flaw: It would be SLOWER than the standard D boat.
