Who do you insure your Macgregor with

Post by barryst1300 »

Hi folks,
Just looking for some info/advice on which is the better insurance companies to insure a MacGregor with?
And, while I know it's subjective, roughly how much should I expect to pay for a comprehensive insurance policy per year? (I currently have a 60% NCB on all my other insurance policies).

Cheers

Barry :)

I use B.O.A.T.U.S. for rivers and inland lakes.

Hi Barry.

We're insured with NRMA. Thankfully we haven't had to make a claim, so I can't comment on how good they are. Since we have multiple policies with them, they provide quite a favourable NCB. I'll have to look for the policy renewal to confirm the cost, but location plays a part in calculating the policy premium.

Barry,

Hi Barry, We are with Club Marine also around $700 a year we have a 2005 :macm: . We tried with RACQ with they won't insure trailer boats over 5 meters.

We are with QBE. That was the cheapest I could find on ringing around at the time. Missus reckons we pay $65ish a month so about 780 a year. From memory its insured for 50K all up (or maybe its 40K...?..). We had to itemize that into hull, trailer, mast, sails. We put a value of 3K for the mast, Lucky because that's exactly how much it cost to get a new one and have all our old fittings put on it. Yeah, I made a claim last year when I did something really stupid in the backyard which meant I needed a new mast.

I remember being a bit frustrated with the claim and waiting on them to arrange an assessor but in the end they just assessed it from the photos I sent them and gave me the 3K minus $250 excess and it all worked out fine.

We are with Nautilus Marine. It costs me $778 this last year for 60K. It is higher because of my keeping it at a Marina whereas keeping it at home I would get a discount for non use in winter months, They assume at a marina you or someone else is using it all the time. The value may be a bit high and I should probably look at that when I renew.

Just a follow up to my original enquiry about insurance. Now that I have purchased a boat I managed to arrange for my :macm: to be insured for $40k through NRMA for $633.00 for 12 months.

Right, I just had my renewal, $63.30 a month so $759 a year, and insured for $48800

Might be time to do some shopping around again I think...

My Sunmaid is insured through Professional Insurance Brokers, the Mac is through RACV.

While the actual cost of insurance is important the claim procedure is just as important if you ever need to make one.

The yacht club was insured through Club Marine and they were a nightmare to deal with and for a tiny $2500 claim it took months and lots of my time taking the boat here and there for assessment even though the assessor had written it off.

I wouldnt insure my bath tub boats with them and certainly not a Mac, it could take years to finalize the claim for $40K if their performance in finalizing the clubs $2500 claim is anything to go by.

When the clubs boat shed roof landed on my Sunmaid, I put the claim in to Professional Insurance Brokers and had a cheque back in the mail in less than a week, no assorors just a single quote, the payout was $3,500, you have to be happy with that :D

Trashed my mast last year and after 2 or 3 weeks of waiting for an assessor, I got annoyed and QBE decided to just assess the damage from the photos I had sent them and gave me the $3000 ( - $250 excess) which I had the mast insured for.

I got annoyed waiting the 2 or 3 weeks but at the end of the day, I guess that's not too bad for an insurance company :)

My boat is also insured through Professional Insurance brokers. They tend to get a very good wrap on TSP and I found Andrew very easy and sensible to deal with. Details as follows:
