Nope. Doesn't have "rope" in the name.BOAT wrote:does downhaul count?
How many ropes on your boat?BOAT wrote:Does the mainsail roll up into the mast with an electric motor, or do you at least get to pull on a rope? Do you get to do any fun stuff anymore like pull on ropes and lines and stuff?

None ON the boat, but when they leave the boat they are called ropes.

Cunningham??
Outhaul??
Ive forgotten all the names of the Harpoon spinnaker - usually because the words I use when flying out do not meet Forum standards..
How many of the 10 do we have so far??

Lazy Guy, Lazy Sheet, After Guy, Fore Guy, and finally, the sheet. SO much better with asyms because all you need is a sheet!! (Modern technology is great!)

Well, here are my 10 'ropes' on a boat that are *not* called a rope, sheet or line:Catigale wrote:Cunningham??

1. Packing gland
2. Halyard
3. Topping lift
4. Outhaul
5. Uphaul
6. Downhaul
7. Painter
8. Lanyard
9. Anchor rode
10. Docking warp (also called a hawser)
To that I have to add "Cunningham", making a total of 11.
I don't count 'Lazyjack' because usually that's a set of integrated 'ropes', not just one single 'rope' - similarly I don't count any 'nets', either.

Yeah, that sounds about right to what I can remember getting drilled into my head by my dad when I was a kid but it's been a long time and my memory is not so good anymore. Mostly those old fashioned kites were flown with what most then would call "guy lines" or a system of "guy line" and so forth, so like you said it really can't be called ropes. (I do still have my old whisker pole).kmclemore wrote:kmclemore wrote:

Don't forget the soap on a rope - that's an important one - salt water soap still comes on a rope, right? (Or am I dating myself again?)
And what about the line you throw to the guy on the dock? The one that has the big huge knot in it that's named after a monkey or something like that? I think that's called a rope too. It's used on big ships as a leader to transfer big dock lines - I can't remember what it's called.
