Since I'm not getting any younger and my wife isn't saying anything about all the money I'm spending
on the boat, I'm going to make the push to finish all my mods.
First thing, take care of my compression post problem. Thank you Sumner and the others
for your replys.
Mods;
1 Rudder Craft rudder
2 ajustable backstay
3 3 ft. jib tracks
4 new shrouds and stays
I read Sumners post on replacing shrouds and stays and other web article's on the subject.
My question is which wire, 304 or 316 stainless. I live in Michigan. All fresh water lakes
The 304 is stronger which I like. The 316 not as strong but more corrosion resistant.
I know there are people out there with the right answer, so am hoping for some help.
The boat is a 1987 Macgregor 25
Note:
I have the front hatch from my boat that i am giving away to anyone willing to pay for shipping.
The hatch has the hinges and lock and is not damaged. Please no dealers, only someone
needing a hatch.

As you probably know bought our wire from riggingonly.com and did it based on this page...Mac 25 wrote:.. My question is which wire, 304 or 316 stainless. I live in Michigan. All fresh water lakes

... where they claim their 316 is within 5%-6% of 304 which isn't much difference and we were taking the boat to saltwater and she will be going there again soon. If you are positive you will only be on fresh water then 304 but if some trips might loom up in the future

Thank You Sumner for your reply:
I will follow your advice and order the 316 stainless wire because
there will be a next owner and the boat can wind up anywhere.
Thank You

Bravo Zulu! Really admire your sense of responsibility for down the line owners and operators. I think that represents the best of boating and the right kind of spirit when we make mods and repairs to our craft.there will be a next owner and the boat can wind up anywhere

Re: shrouds and stays
Or there's dyneema dux, which never corrodes and is maintenance free. But it is quite bit more expensive unless you do all the work yourself.
If you use 5mm Dyneema Dux and proper thimbles, I'm convinced that either bowline knots or figure-8 knots for eyes are more than sufficient for standing rigging, based on a 60% of breaking strength figure for these knots in this material and the fact that this size of dyneema is well more than 200% over the breaking strength of stainless.
But I don't have a good source for bulk dyneema.
