Merc 9.9 Outboard for Mac19

Post by Mac19sailor »

I'm interested in putting a 9.9hp Merc with 25 inch shaft on my Mac19 in order to power cruise at hull speed for at least six straight hours. Would appreciate advice on whether I should choose the standard 9.9hp model or the ProKicker 9.9 model. The prokicker is different because it provides higher thrust owing to it's larger gear case and large four blade prop. But since the prokicker is largely used by fishermen as a trolling motor on big heavy bass boats, I'm wondering if the prokicker is primarily designed for intermittent heavy load use, and if so, would not perform well, or last long,if I were to use it to power cruise. Thanks

Tohatsu along with making the smaller Nissan motors also makes the Mercury motors below 40 HP. If there is much price difference I'd just buy the Tohatsu 9.8 HP in the shaft length you want. That is what we did. Bought the extra-long shaft 9.8 as we wanted to mount it higher so the controls were easier to reach.

It came with the 'very' high thrust prop (probably the same as the one model you referenced). We wanted a spare prop on board so bought the next lower thrust prop that is still a high thrust 4 blade and mounted it and kept the original as a spare.

Bought that motor and also a Tohatsu long shaft 3 1/2 HP from....

... with no problems. The 3 1/2 is used on the Zodiac but could also work on the Mac since it has the long shaft and I can remove the elevated mount in a minute or so and put the 3 1/2 on. That way there is a spare just in case we need it outboard on the boat. Both outboards have been great and would buy again and save the money that the Merc and Nissan and I thing now also Johnson charge just to have their name on the Tohatsu  ,

I think you want to higher thrust reduction gear of the pro kicker (same as the Bigfoot) for that application. You are moving a relatively big boat at slow speed, which is Bigfoot Heaven.
