compression post problem
Hello All
I am new to sailing and new to this forum. but have been reading it for years,
My boat is a 1987 MacGregor 25 and my problem is the compression post on my boat.
I tryed to post a picture but it would'nt post.
Anyway the compression post is being pushed into the fiberglass column next to the seat.
Is there a fix for this problem. It gets worse each season.

Re: compression post problem
Sounds like you are going to have to reinforce something. Do you have pictures of the area?

Re: compression post problem
Sumner, thank you for your reply.
Have been looking at your post's for years on a different site, and have been impressed by your mods
to your trailed and boat.
For what ever reason I can't post a picture on this post.
If you go to the MacGregor owners site and look at the pictures in my (Mac 25) album, you will see the
compression post indentation. When looking under the seat opening, there is a metal bracket
with two supports, the bracket is bent a little and the supports look like they were over compressed.
Hope you or someone have repaired this problem with good results.
Thank you Mac 25

Upload it to http://www.tinypic.com and copy and paste the url with the UBB code for images* that it returns. Paste it right into the body of your reply. Leave a blank line before and after the url, for easier viewing by the peanut gallery.Mac 25 wrote:For what ever reason I can't post a picture on this post.
*(img)(/img) but with square brackets. If I post the square brackets with no url, the forum software cleans it out and nothing shows at all, so I used parentheses to illustrate.

I think his problem might be he has only made 2 posts here. Is it still the rule you have to have so many posts before you have permission to post a picture?

Re: compression post problem
your right, I have only used this site for information but never posted a question.
I hate to ask this of you, but if you go to MacGregor Owners.com and go to Owner Directory, then
open Photo Album, find User Name: Mac 25 and Album Name; boat at slip.
In that folder there are pictures of the boat and a drawing of the problem area.
The boat is covered up for the winter and it would be hard to take some pictures.
If you are wondering why I did not post the question on the other site, I feel like it has been taken
over by a handfull of bored sailors that use it like Facebook.

Re: compression post problem
Okay: Looking at your drawing. Since I can't see the problem directly I can only make a suggestion. Check for a space between the hull liner and the keel trunk. You may have to put some reinforcement, Oak, Teak, ???, under the mast post between them. Friend of mine had the same problem and the mast would "pump" under pressure. Eventually he got dismasted. Something like that could ruin your day
P.S. Where did you get the material for the cabin curtains? Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Re: compression post problem
Freedom 77 Thank You for the post.
The stainless steel L-bracket that supports the mast post on my boat is bent down from the
pressure of the mast. Blue water yachts does not sale this part, so I will have to have it
made at a shop I use. I was thinking of making the bracket longer so it is up against the
keel trunk where I would glass the free end. This would give the bracket support on both
ends. The question I have is my MacGregor is a thin skinned 27 year old boat and the part of
keel trunk that I plan to attach to is supporting a 625 lbs. keel.
Will I be Fixing one problem and creating a new one?
Freedom 77 My wife bought the curtains at Bed Bath & Beyond.

Re: compression post problem
Hi Mac 25, Freedom is a 1976 V-25. That makes her 38+ years old. Venture/Macs are well built and will take a lot of punishment. The Mac 25 is basically the same hull as the V-25 with a little less displacement. The keel trunk on both our "Yachts" is probably the strongest part of the boat. Otherwise the keel would just break it out and fall off.
If you make the support as long as possible fore and aft it will help to spread the load. Would like to hear Sumner's and other members of the Legion of the Damned thoughts on this. Still curious as to how the bracket got bent so badly. That is one heck of a load. I'll check Bed Bath and Farout on the curtains. By the way the upholstery fabric on your boat is Quaker Mills Sorensen Brown which you can't get anymore. Used to be the dealer here so I kinda have al little education on the line. Post some pics when you can. Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt.

Re: compression post problem
Hi. Nice boat with nice mods. Did you do the mods or the PO? I would want to know WHY there is so much pressure on the post as to drive it down into the support like that. How much rig tension are you using? How tight are those baby stays, once the mast is up? Are you using the original size wire for your shrouds? They look larger in the pics, but it might be an illusion in your pictures. These boats are sturdy, for what they are, but exceeding their design limits will cause issues. Look down the sides of your boat, are the sides sucked in where the chainplates are?

Re: compression post problem
I am not sure how similar my problem is but I am curious on opinions on what to do (I cannot get answers out of BWY or MacGregor (factory Sales - my dealer)). My mast brackets are installed off center so the mast foot rests such that it has broken a section of the deck away.

Wondering if I need to cut a recess in the deck and install a metal plate. or even cut new deck brackets to center the mast.
