[Berber Boy]

During my recent sailing holidays I thought about the multitude of Aliases that we use on our site and what the reasoning or choices in making them are. I respect that many may be very personal but for those who are happy to share it could be very interesting.

I'll put my my bit in to kick it off>

Berber Boy - Much of my life has been spent in various parts of Africa and in Northern Mali (West Africa) the Berber ethnic people wear a special Blue fabric that is very close to the Blue mac color. To me my alias reminds me of those days when the only sailing I could do was to ride those ungainly "Ships of the Desert" across the dunes of the sahara with my Berber friends. With a not a drop of water to sail in.

That's pretty heavy BB. The closest I came to riding a Camel was making my two daughters do it when we re-visited my birthplace, twenty years ago!
My choice of the Crikester was cemented by the passing of Steve Irwin before we bought the boat in 2010. I was a big fan of his, and always connected my Aussie birthplace with him (although I'm now more Canadian than Maple syrup - ex 67.).
Nothing like a big surprise while Mac'ing!

Tomfoolery. Admiral 'suggested' it, many years and several boats ago. Every boat I've had was named Tomfoolery.

Doesn't need much 'splaining, does it?

Oh, and it has nothing to do with Lithuania, either.

My First car was a Plymouth Barracuda, (still have it too). Did the first name/car mashup to comeup with an online handle about 25 years ago and it stuck.

Berber boy - great story. Wish I had the imagination to come up with a name with a story like it.

On another note, my wife and I love Africa. Spent some time in Zim, SA, and Swaziland. Swaziland was a favorite - we were part of a group rebuilding an old mining town to house orphans. I was discussing our love of Africa with friends from Zimbabwe and they put it down to an eloquent reason. They suggested that we're all drawn back to the country of the "First Mother".

Like Crikey, Dirko has it's origins in Australia, but again mine is not as imaginative. We lived in Queensland for three years and found the locals turned all names and most words into two syllables. If you have a name with one syllable - "o" is added to the end. If it's three - be prepared to lose one. I keep in touch with my old mates, and to them I'm still Dirko.

I was in Swazi last year leading an Evaluation of a major HIV / AIDS Intervention there. For me after 24 years living there Africa is home. Berber Cub and her two sisters were all born in Ethiopia. I delivered two of them myself. Have traveled and worked across 51 of the 56 countries there. Some good sailing in South Africa and could be elsewhere. The only boating I did was to water ski on Lake Victoria while dodging curious Hippos! I guess there is an adventorous spirit in most of us or we wouldn't be sailors.

I have told my wee lassie, she with the chestnut hair, who signed up today as Berber Cub that you will get on her case pretty quick after you see her sailing in the Post " In search of the Vice Admiral". I put it up today and I am sure she would appreciate a few hints from our Highlander

My wife and I picked a cool name-based nickname for her to use for her emails and such. Well, she's smart and quick, so the name is appropriate for her. I'm just a geeky engineer type and never had a cool nickname.
She hadn't used it very much and so i started using it for my forum names and such, just for consistency and brevity, and so now I just stay hidden behind her alias.

Before the Mac, we did a lot of trailer camping with our dogs. K9Sailors was taken on this forum so I went with K9Kampers. Ironically, on the RV forum I am K9Sailors, as K9Kampers was taken!

My wife agreed to let me buy the boat -- I let her name the boat. Nuf said.

Oh, and I think her original spelling was "Lunacy" - but our boat flag may have led to some kind of official medical response

We're Clan Morrison... but my forefathers came to America in 1660, so I suppose it's pretty far back by now.
