Anyone ever heard of a Mac 26SL?

Post by Mac_AL »

I have been lurking on this website for quite awhile now, and although I do not currently own a Mac, I am very interested in getting a Mac. To that end, I have been keeping an eye on the classified ads on this site and EBay. Well, this morning when I was surfing, I ran across what is described as a MacGregor 26 SL on EBay :?. I think it is actually a 26X, and the listers are just confused. But, I thought I would ask the forum here, because everyone seems pretty well informed about Macs. Did MacGregor ever have a special edition SL? Or did some re-seller list it as something different after adding some of their own touches? The interesting thing is that the hull seems to be blue like the 26M, but it definitely is not a 26M. Any thoughts?

Link to ebay sale here

Currently at 9k

Definitely an X which has been painted blue for speed, no doubt.

Seems like a lot to pay at an auction with no survey or inspection to me, but an auction is true capitalism at work.....

The SL stands for Sloop. Some states title the boats as Macgregor SL or Sloop. Michigan has titled my boat that way. The boat is an X.

A blue X?.....regardless of speed, lack of or there of, doesn't seem right....hurricane survivor? Repairs required a new paint job? I am just wary of a boat out of the ordinary..........Description says undamaged, are swamped boats considered undamaged?....has there ever been a blue X? This is really bothering me!! :macx: Randy

Is this perhaps the missing link?

Can it be??? Is it... could it be... I hesitate to say... the long awaited, very posh, ultra fast** version of the 26, as redesigned by the legendary Mercedes Benz?

MacGregor's evolved from floating leafs billions of years ago. In archaeological terms this could indeed be some kind of rare missing link.

Observe the strange rudders for example:

I think this species of blue MacGregor 26X might have died out cause the white ones proved faster.

I think the Mercedes insignia was there to frighten away competitors.

Mystery Solved!

Post by Mac_AL »

Thanks Carl Noble, that prety much answers my question. So, even though it is a 26X, they register it as a 26SL and I am guessing the people listing the boat just took the identification straight off the registration. Mystery solved!

After reading some of your comments, I guess I have another question. Does anyone think that the boat could have been damaged and if so, what could really be wrong with her. I mean the Mac is a solid fiberglass boat, so if it was swamped, couldnt you just drain her out and be good as new? Or would that royally mess up the electrical system or something else? The blue hull does make me wonder wh they changed it. Unless they just wanted to look different.

Also, what is a good price for this particular boat, from what I have seen, aroun $16,000.00 would be about right. And would you buy this boat unseen?

Just a total noobie looking for a cheap way to get into the hobby (or is it a lifestyle).

I wouldn't even consider buying it unseen... But, that's me...

I've bought stuff off Ebay before, and had mostly good luck...

On big stuff like this, I've always been careful to make sure I could get there before the deposit was due. That way, if there were big issues, and there was once, I just walked away... I'd rather get bad feedback than get burned...

But, with that said, these guys have pretty good feedback and appear to do this for a living... So, the risk probably isn't as big as with the rednecks that tried to burn me...

There is no way this boat is worth that much. I really have not seen those rudders and suspect it is a very early model. Maybe it's a 97 with some kind of rudder mod.

If you can spend that kind of money there many better.

As far as its value. I think you can get a decent '97 with a 50hp 2 stroke Tahatsu for 14K to 15k. Remember this is a 2 stroke. I would not buy this 2 stroke - noisy. Course this price would be without many expensive mods.

This looks like a much better boat:

I would hesitate to buy that boat off ebay. I would get one directly from an owner with plenty of pictures sent before I went off to buy.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

You know, I am thinking Marty McFly here. Maybe this was a Hollywood concept sailboat.... the blue hull with a flux capacitor, the boat planing at 8.8 knots with a 1.75 genoa, a Mercedes insignia, 1.12 jiga-watts produced with a lightening strike to the mast, and the boat travels through time.

Would be interesting if someone in the neighborhood could stop by and give it a look.... I agree that it looks like a very early X.

SL stands for speed of light. Hence the blue hull.

Actually if it is a 97, 16k is a litte steep. thats a few bucks off of what I paid for my 97 when it was 1 year old with only 3 times under sail. Plus our boat had everygfactory option available and quite a few extras besides.
