WHAT HAVE I DONE!

Post by TIMBOAT2 »

Well, I worked on the V21 over 2 years, then I ran across a poor ol' 1977 V25 sitting in some guys yard out in the middle of the desert, went and looked at it
convinced myself I didn't want it. When I got home I called him to let him know. Somehow, that boat was calling to me not to let it die in the desert and then
out of my mouth came an offer so low I was ashamed of myself. He laughed(as I expected he would) and said "come get it!" Oh what have I done!
So I now have a 1977 V25. under all the desert dirt I found a beautiful boat.
The V21 was ready to have its first splash in 6 years and I was pretty proud of the work I did to her. First person to see her bought her.
She sold for over 6X what I paid for her. Still a little sad.

― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Or to put another way....you needed that extra four feet! :)

I see a bunch on Craigs list lately. A Mac 25 for $750. Here's a fast blue hull M for $11k.

Timboat2,
I once completely restored a 1977 Catalina 22. (great boat..... a little small for weekending) Then I sailed her for one season and sold her. Didn't even have a prospective new boat at the time.
I had a total of $1800 in her (and a lot of labor). I sold her for four grand and that was over 15 years ago.

Half the joy of owning a sailboat, for me anyway, is working on, and improving them. I would, likely, have some old boat in my back yard right now, just to work on, had I not been deeply involved improving my home and property for these last four years.

And I love stories like this. I think it's great to take some forgotten thing that is junk to most eyes, buying it for almost nothing and turning it into a thing of beauty.

That old saying about a boat being a hole in the water that you throw money into................ doesn't apply to people like us. I've made money on every boat I've owned then sold (as long as you don't count the labor........ which is part of the fun for me)

Have you guys ever seen a movie called: The Shawshank Redemption ?

Image

In the last scene Morgan Freeman is old after many years in prison and he is finally free and meeting with a very old friend he has not seen in decades. The old friend (Tim Robbins) is looking younger than ever and seems to be a happy man doing what he wants to do with his time: he is fixing up an old boat - as if to perpetually always be 'preparing' for an ocean journey.

This is the image I have in my mind of what it will be like when I die as a very old man. After I take my last breath, I will open my eyes and find myself walking along a beach -

There in the distance i will see my dad, looking young and free, working on an old boat preparing for an ocean journey doing what he loved to do for all eternity, and waiting for me to show up so we can cast off and head out to sea and pick up all the rest of our friends scattered around the world.

What a life. Yur just livin the life TIMBOAT! ENJOY!

My kids have other ideas about boats and when I die. They disturbingly involve a 15 foot wooden boat I built and explosives - and me :?

Just in case some of you might not have seen that show here is the last scene:

Morgan Freeman is me, Tim Robbins is my dad - that's how I picture it.
