Just to be contrary when/if I repower I will drop to a Merc 15 or maybe even a 9.9

I hope to be buried in my a Mac, so resale isn't an issue for me but the real gate will be when I find my free Hudson River runner without a motor...off comes the 50 EFI onto that boat, on goes the new Merc 15. I love the new "all controls on the tiller" Mercs.

For the free boat, I'll have to camp out in DaveNC yard for a few days and see what he drags up this week.... :D

In your neck of the woods there's very little use for the speedboat aspect I'd imagine. I went two years without planning for any reason other than to show off the boat's capability for a minute or two. Took 18 months to burn off my first 24 gallons of fuel.

Then the Admiral decided that instead of taking two days to get home from Catalina, she'd rather be in Oceanside in three hours, and we finally put it to good use. Burned off the 2nd 24 gallons in that three hours.

Planing speeds on the Hudson make it cool, but on the Canal you have a hull speed limit anyway, and certainly on the Cape we motor cruise at hull speed only. Ergo the 15 is the right motor for us. Its ridiculously expensive in a XL shaft - almost 4k, but thats why we work for a living....

Wow! I guess there's no reason why motor price would be linear with hp, but that's hefty! Are you fighting enough tidal currents and wind that a 9.9 wouldn't do the job? Or are you looking for stopping power? Or is the price just in the XL shaft no matter what the size is?

The 9.9 XLS is close in cost. Im torn between the 9.9 Bigfoot (2.42 gear ratio) and the 15 Prokicker (2.1 gear ratio) with, today, the tipping factor being amperage on the 15 (138 Watts vs 76 for the 9.9)

In edit...corrected amps to watts, thanks Ray.

yeah, you've got a lot of admirals in training, and I've noticed that admirals have about twice the amp-draw of captains.

Watts, sorry about that. I can't keep current on my units, too much brainpower needed.

We've fitted a Suzuki 4 stroke 15hp c/w high thrust prop to our 26X....more than adequate....anything much above 1/2 revs is a waste. One thing though the first longer trip ie 11days and burnt out the charging system....Suzuki claim its just for recharging the start battery and some nav lights but cant handle long duty atall

Don't ya wish someone would make a 10-15 hp with HD lower in about 5:1 swinging 16 inch prop and a 1000watt alternator, :)

It's the engine that every sailboat under 30' needs. Not sure why there's not deemed to be a market for it.

Cat, Been over a Year since I put on the 50hp Big Foot.
I like the power when I need it against a 3 knot current and the 18amps it puts back in my batteries.
I like the 3200 rpms at 7 knots.
Sometimes I think about the 20 ft. Pontoon boat I have rented with 25 hp.
Looking at a 70 hp 20ft.
I keep looking as age puts me to wonder.

I have the 50 HP Bigfoot now and do love it. I'm not going to change it unless another boat enters the fleet that needs it.

The kicker  for me is when I came through Westport MA gut at full ebb in the Nissan 4 HP at full throttle and got through...albeit still about 1/2 knot

When I first got my Mac I used a Honda 7.5 4 stroke
Did a great job

But I am in the camp that wants a hybrid boat

If anything my next motor would be a 150

This is what the admiral has decided will be 'our' next boat - the C-Cory 25 with a single 150 hp OB (can use twin 90's, but I'd rather have a single). The pic is of a 26, but there's little difference that's obvious, and the Venture 26 is a new model (long story to that, including the original designer's history and the name 'Venture').

No tilting, lots of glass, full standing headroom, no 'below decks', not too much heavier than a Mac motor-sailor, room for the dog and a couple of deck chairs, and I'm getting too old to work a sailboat (according to her :P pppffffttt to that). But then, she's the type that rolls the window down for the toll booth a mile before getting there - she likes to think ahead. :P
