Season's First Sail

Post by DaveC426913 »

Finally got her out on the water. Both her's (SeaSaw and the Admiral).

She handled herself (Admiral) pretty well on the helm, hardly panicked when she (SeaSaw) heeled over to 15 degrees. She's a bit tender (Admiral).

I muffed up though. Between not hooking up to shore power yet, and accidentally leaving the radio on overnight, when we ran out of wind, I went to power us home, but we had run out of juice. Not even enough to use the radio.

Luckily, we'd been heading back to harbour. A passing boater towed us in and the Admiral handled herself very well coasting into our slip while I manned the bow.

I wonder if I will ever live this down, as we limped past all the other club boats under tow... :(

Get one of those small lithium Ion jumpstarters that have been posted recently on the forum. More than enough juice for a jumpstart, and unlike a second battery, you can't use them so they're always charged and ready. Plus they hold a charge for two years.

Nice to read a good sailing story. I keep this on board for just those occasions when a good sail has a surprise. It also has a USB port, LED light, and more. It's good to have around.

Leaving tomorrow AM for a last sail before winter and have just loaded my charged up Jump starter. Came in and saw your post. Fortunate that there was someone to tow you in. I Never leave home without mine! Get one that has a small built in compressor. Its great to top up the trailer tires and the mooring fenders

Enjoy your sailing season

Dave those battery packs are great. Canadian Tire usually has one of them for sale quite often. Many now also come with a usb port which comes in handy. Never needed to actually use one for dead battery yet but nice to have just in case.

Yes rocky's right they r very handy I got mine on sale 1/2 price , rather than buy a forth boat bat I bought one of these I can use it in my small dinghy with my electric motor , run my coolers of it , run my 22" led 12vdc/120vac tv off it too, can be recharged in the car or boat , mine has a built in smart bat charger so it can be left on charge all the time with no concerns & maintains the booster pac , also has removable flash light , usb port & 2 - 12volt outlets & a storage compartment in the rear for both ac/dc power cables Oh and the built in booster cables & u have it avail all winter for emg. use mine is 800 crank amps

Usually called a battery pack or booster pack. They have different types with different features. The one I have has a compressor, a little flashlight a twelve volt and usb socket and built in booster cables. I think it was on sale last week for about $80. They're found in the automotive section.

John pointed out that his is 800 amps. If you can can find that sort of cranking power, go for it. All of the little extra stuff is nice (the LED light is great to have), but cranking up your motor is the primary reason for the device. You never know when you will need it.

How is that to run my 5000 watt AC unit below decks?
Fans here in SW Florida in summer, just can't cut the mustard and need the 2000 Gen. Set.

Check with one of the electrical mavens :D

Maybe you should check with a guru, imam, priest, or rabbi. You're not looking for a power supply. You're looking for something from a greater power. :P :D

Well, by sheer coinky-dink, I was at a friend's fundraiser last night where they had a silent auction, and I managed to score myself a 1050 Amp booster. So now I can boost a dead battery, charge a phone AND inflate my raft.

Saw one of those last weekend that had the flashlight, jumpers, usb ect ect but also had a dyno cranker. Can't imagine how long it would take to hand crank enough juice to turn a larger outboard over, but if you need to the option is there.
