Gate Valve Is Hard To Open
I had real hard time trying to open gate valve for the first time this spring. The valve was closed in winter. I cleaned it from outside, sprayed it with water and cycled it up and down trying to open. After I got it opened the valve worked fine and I could open and close it with little effort.
I left it closed and next day had similar problem. Should I try lubricating it? What product should I use? Or is there any other way to fix it?
Thanks for your help!

Silicone spray would be good. WD40 will do in a pinch since it does not adversely affect plastics (legend is that it is made from fish oil - not petroleum).

I've used electric bulb grease which contains silicone. Wear a rubber glove, as that stuff is hard to clean off.RobertB wrote:Silicone spray would be good.

Robert, thanks for reply. After thinking more about it I went ahead and purchased new valve from BWY. They have it in stock and promised to ship today. My boat is still on the trailer and I was planning to put it in marina in about two weeks. So I have enough time to replace it and not worry about it. The valve I have now came with the boat and is 5 years old.

dxg - you might want to take a look at (take apart?) the old gate valve and see what the problem is after you have it off. You might be able to prevent it from happening in the future by doing something simple? Five years doesn't seem like much for it. Or report back what you find so someone else might be able to avoid the problem in the future?

Re: Gate Valve Is Hard To Open
Every year I lube the gate valve with Evinrude grease. The grease is designed for marine use and won't wash off easily from the movement of the water against the valve as you sail/power.
My boat is a 2004 model and I have yet to change the gate valve.

Evinrude Triple Guard grease worked great! I already bought replacement valve, but may not install it right away now. I'll keep it as a spare. BWY had it in stock and shipped the same day. It is not the first time I buy from them and they are great!EZ wrote:Every year I lube the gate valve with Evinrude grease. Mine is a 2001 and I spray it with PAM once a year. Works a treat!

Nothing against BWY, I order lots of stuff from them. But if your in a pinch for a gatevalve and need 2 day delivery for free try amazon. Assuming you have prime.
$33 and free 2 day shipping with prime.

Re: Gate Valve Is Hard To Open
Gotta love the Amazon prime shipping. And for $4.00 they'll overnight anything not matter how much it weighs. We ordered a trampoline. It came in 2 days in 3 heavy boxes....for free shipping.
My gate valve was stiff. Shot it with some silicone and it was happy again.
