Venture 23' How Do I Rig Jib Sails?

Post by campbmic »

Greetings! I'm new to sailing and before I could even put my boat in the water I had an accident and broke the mast in half -.-

During my repairs I removed all of the hardware and rigging from the mast and deck to sort through everything. I have the new mast up with the stays and shrouds attached. I also have the main sail and boom attached, but can;t quite figure out how the jib sails work.

I have two forestays that both attach to the front of the mast. Where each stay attaches there is also a pulley that I'm assuming runs a halyard for each of the jib sails. Also, it looks like there is a small boom for one of the jib sails too? Aside from that I'm pretty clueless. Does anyone have some advice for me or resources?

Thanks!

Is the boom actually a whisker pole for a spinnaker? The forestay that attaches to the higher part of the mast is probably for the jib.

Did you try Googling some images to see if it makes sense?

The Venture 23 is a cutter rig, isn't it? With a bow sprit? Maybe that's the extra 'boom' you're talking about. Two forestays, as it has two head sails, and a main sail.

Really pretty boats, by the way. 8)

Here are some pictures of the V23. A google search yields loads of them.

Oh, and depending on the length of the extra boom, it might be for a self-tending head sail (staysail), if the sail is small enough to clear the mast with a boom attached when coming about.

I have a vn23 myself although I am using a different mast currently and have sloop rigged the boat.

I still have the original VN23 mast hanging on some hooks out back.

If you need me to post any pics of anything let me know...I have an extensive collection of VN23 photos that I have saved from virtually every Craigslist ad for a VN23 for the last year. When someone posts on the Yahoo group of a VN23 for sale I have gone to the link and saved all the photos of the boats..

they are nice boats...I have done A LOT of work on mine....

cheers

The best source for information, pictures, and advice for the Venture of Newport 23 by far is the Venture 23 Yahoo forum at http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/venturenewport

Take the time to browse through the many photo albums and then post your questions.
Also see my google+ pictures at http://www.picasaweb.com/heinzir/chiquita.

Your extra boom is for a self-tending Staysail. Not all VN23s use one.
