Beware. Situational awareness decays with age.I'm still trying to figure out how I possibly lost track of it.
Not that I have any first-hand experience with that at all.
No,
Not me. That could never happen...

There are three kinds of people in the worldAnother silver lining is that I didn't replace my mast when I bent it in a mast fall three years ago, so I’m getting two mast accidents for the price of one.
1 Glass half empty
2 Glass half full
3 Fill the glass half with water, call the kiddies in, and drop sodium metal in for fireworks....add a little acid for the show

" Now it's definitely time for a new Mastreb-uild".

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

I would forget unbending that one...get a new one, or a used one from a parts boat. Or the guys who wants to replace his with carbon...not a bad idea if it makes raising it easier.

You could do like the sailors of old and go out and find a tree and make one from scratch.

The "right" trees are notoriously hard to find. So much so that the King of England declared that all the tall white pines in New England were crown property and harvesting one illegally was a serious offense.cptron wrote:You could do like the sailors of old and go out and find a tree and make one from scratch.![]()

don't laugh, I've seen a few older sailboats up here with hand made sitka spruce masts, as well as smaller older fishing boats with handmade spruce outriggers.

Re: Now it's definitely time for a new mast
That's too bad mastreb...but you know, the old saying is like gear-up landings in an airplane...there are those who have broken a mast and those who still will. I lost my mast back in 2006, also by clipping a channel marker very near my home port that I was too well aware of. That is part of the problem actually, your mind is less alert because you are in more familiar territory and so I kinda tricked myself into thinking I had already passed the marker when I hadn't. The good news is that when I rebuilt my mast, I added a lot of good stuff I didn't have before...new lights, less mast rake, spinnaker halyard, etc...so, make the best out of a bad situation.

Re: Now it's definitely time for a new mast
Here's how the insurance call went:
Progressive: "Okay Mr. Strebe, I'm going to recommend one of our preferred repair shops, 'Speedzone Paint & Autobody' in Santee."
Me: "Yeah, no. There's no paint or body damage, and this is not a car."
Progressive: "Is there a repair shop you would prefer to use?"
Me: "No, there's not. I'd prefer to use a boatyard, because this is a boat. Maybe somebody who's seen a mast before, and knows how to rig one."
Progressive: "Okay, we can certainly work with any boatyard you prefer."
