trouble with VHF Antenna

Post by rszobel »

I jsut replaced my vhf antenna with the exact same one i had before. reran the line through the deck fitting to the radio, soldered the core to the pin on the end, placed the mesh outer core between end peices and also placed the teflon washers between the end of the core and the outer mesh wiring. Nothing - zip - nadda. I tried simply going to local weather station and heard absolutely nothing - adjusted squelch and volume and nothing. the radio was working perfectly fine before one of my dock lines snagged the wire and broke the last antenna.

any ideas of things to check ??

neither of those is the issue -- checked with multimeter. other end is connected directly to antenna at factory and brand new.

I would double-check the connector you soldered, maybe a strand of the shield-mesh is shortening the antenna. If you sure that the radio is working and that your connection is good then you might have gotten a defective antenna.

Just for fun, try sticking a wire (about 3 feet) into the back of the antenna connection on the VHF. Tune to a local weather station. Should get something. DO NOT try to transmit. Wire doesn't have to be antenna wire, just a single wire.

If the radio is working, then I would also check the connections again. Maybe check the connector with a multimeter. Pull the connector off and check for continuity from the center lead to the shield. Shouldn't have any.

BTW, this wouldn't happen if you mounted the antenna on top of the mast. :)
