Anchorages near Southport/Bald Head Island (NC)

Post by SENCMac26x »

Good Morning,

After doing some work and local sailing, my buddies and I are going to try our first "weekend" trip on the Slow-Mac from Carolina Beach (our hometown) to either SouthPort or Bald Head Island (depending on weather/conditions/etc). We're planning on leaving Saturday 7/20 and overnighting hopefully at an anchorage.

I'm looking for suggestions. I've heard about Dutchman Creek, and looking at the charts "Elizabeth Creek" running behind Oak Island looks kinda promising. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, will anyone else be in the area? (cptron?)

Sorry I didn't see this post until now :( I hope you had a good time. We sail from Southport to Carolina Beach. Unfortunately we have been busy trying to figure out why I keep loosing voltage to the GPS which causes it to turn off. I am in the process of rewiring the main power to the pedastal to hopefully cure this dilemma. Keep in touch and we will hook up sooner or later. Tell us about your trip. did you make it and did you find anchorage?

Mine was set on sleep mode and shut down all the time until I changed the setting (not saying you didnt check that) but aren't electronics wonderful with truly badly thought out default settings? My depth sounder was in demo mode I had no Idea until I hit a sand bar in 24' of water I was just thrilled that Garmin had a start up demo mode that made me read a hours worth of boring manual to turn off and the WONDERFUL thing is when power is disconnected (as in stored safely) they tend to go back to those LOVELY default settings. just Genius :x

Good Morning Guys,

The wind and current got pretty rough Saturday, and we got caught in an isolated storm close just past the Fort Fisher ferry.

Checking with NOAA it looked like conditions would deteirorate and I didn't want to be stuck somewhere, expecially since one of my crew was below sick.

So we sailed back up to Carolina Beach State Park Marina and just camped out there for night. Worked out well, I got to ride out a storm in the boat (which was I was terrified of) and get some experience on where to stow, that I have too much stuff on board, things I need to improve...oh and stooping really low :-P

Overall it was good trip, relaxing and educational and in retrospect I'm glad I did my first overnight at a Marina. That being said, I'm hoping to apply my new found knowledge and anchor out somewhere soon.

I have a few pics I can Post later.

Cptron,
Sorry to hear about the electrical issues, I've been collecting parts/wires/panels/etc in preparation for my massive rewiring project.

Cstriker,
Sure if you really want to slum it, I'll gladly take someone more knowledgeable than me :-P

Hey Senc, have you done your rewiring yet. Found the problem to be battery connections needed cleaning and I a bad connecton to the Lowrance. Gave me some experiance and now I have a better set up. Have you run into the person that cstriker sold his boat to yet?

We put in somewhere near beaufort, first night at beaufort docks, sail to Cape Lookout have bonfire cookout and then head back next morning.
