The steering on my 2008 is starting to get kind of rough. The cable does not move smoothly anymore but it feels as if the cable would have developed tough-spots where it almost has a ratcheting feeling. Has anybody re-lubed the steering cable on an ?
Or are these known symptoms of pre-eminent failure of the steering?
If so, has anybody changed the steering in an m and could advise of the details how to go about?
Thank you for your assistance
This has been on my mind for a while now. Next miserable day on the boat I'm planning on taking the wheel off and taking a look. Figure it can't hurt and at least looking at it I can determine if it needs replacing. I usually shoot some silicon spray onto the rack and pinion in the aft berth. I find it sticks and stays better than oil based and doesn't attract the dog fur. But I haven't looked in the steering cable itself.
Not sure about but on my I took off the cable on the motor end and attached a large clear hose large enough that went over all the solid push pull rods. Once that was done I put a hose clamp on the hose over the cable. On the other end I did the similar thing with a compressor air fitting on it with a hose clamp. In the hose I put in some fine Lube or RP7 we call it and put compressed air into the line (holding up the line high) with the lube and turned the wheel left to right forcing the lube down the cable, this freed up the stiff spots. ( carefull the other end comes out black and messy) Once that was done got some Gear oil and placed into the tube and done the same procedure untill oil came out the other end. This procedure prevented me from the cable replacement and removal. The steering has been smooth ever since. Good Luck
Hope this Helps
Steve
There is no rack and pinion in the aft berth on a 26M,to ensure its your cable,go to the aft berth and disconnect it from the rudder linkage on the starboard side rudder arm.you might find the steering smooth as silk and the binding could be at another point.
