Macs oscillate terribly when anchored from the bow--more so than any other boat I've seen. Stern anchoring could only improve the situation as it couldn't possibly get worse. It would be a lot easier to set and clear the anchor from the cockpit so long as you took care not to foul the rode in the prop.
I'll try it next time we anchor, and if I like it, I'll put an anchor bracket on the stern. The problem becomes where to put the chain locker if you routinely anchor from the stern.

When I anchor out (not near shore) I usually pull up into the wind, drop the front (Danforth) anchor, reverse the vessel until the anchor sets nicely, then wait for the boat to settle in the wind direction. Once it has settled - usually takes 15 minutes or so - I then drop an aft mushroom anchor on a simple rope (no chain rode). This secondary anchor won't always stop the boat from swaying, but it greatly slows the movement and in most conditions it does eliminate it. The mushroom anchor and line are easily stored in the lazarette under the cockpit seats (where the fuel tank would normally be - I have an inboard tank).

Or in the fuel locker, as there is just enough room for a mushroom. We had the same problem on a supersonic 27 keel boat it would always dance around on anchor and drag.
What we did with our 26X was to strengthen the trailer hitch with a backing plate and use that for both anchoring & mooring .
The trailer hitch gives the boat a lower center of gravity for the anchor point.
We tie up first to the bow cleats & then put a loop in the anchor line, then use a short line with heavy clips both ends, clip one end to the loop, one end to the trailer hitch. then let out some line until the load is taken on the trailer hitch. We also have a rubber mooring shock absorber on the line.
Lucky Drifter now settles down fine.

If we are having a serious case of the dancing
especially at night will usually use a bridle to one of the anchors to pull the nose into the chop especially when the tide or current pull and even wind makes it want to pull elsewhere but usually the two anchors set at 90 deg from the bow slows it down enough.

As for the question on the fuel fumes, yes, I do have a blower for when the motor is running and the tank is also sealed inside a box below decks so it does not smell whatsoever in the cabin. It's been there over 10 years now and it's still fine. I pull the cover off and check it annually.
As to smoking, given that both my parents died early from smoking related diseases, the first person that ever is brave enough to try smoking in my boat, car or home will be swiftly thrown overboard, onto the road or outside the house. I have very little tolerance for smokers around me... losing my parents far earlier than I should have... well... let's just say I have a bit of a grudge.

The problem with anchoring stern to is the wave action. Sure, the boat probably sails less that way, but you get waves splashing into the motor well.

I use 2 collapsible canvas water buckets deployed from the stern cleats--same buckets that I use for trolling. I store them and other gear in a large plastic bin that sits directly under the captain's seat. At first I used the lid that came with the bin but now I drilled a few holes in the bin to let water out. This is also a very effective OB noise muffler, even the e-tec 60 can use some help in the noise department

Yup my concern as well - those motor control cables where they enter the hull and the steering arm hole and not exactly a streamlined rear on the lady. How big is your tank inside - and why bother in the first place?
Sumners steadying sail as well as the drogue overboard, seems the best way to go for the 'dance'. Though I went crazy two years ago unwrapping it from the prop several times. I'll have to try again using the stern with an anchor this time.

Reason is because it freed up the cockpit, it's less hassle to deal with and it moves the weight lower in the boat.
