Oru Kayak

Post by moondancer »

Hi everyone
Just ran across this while looking at a fishing site. A folding kayak that looks like it will store easily on our boats. The folds are supposed to last 2000 cycles. Does look interesting though. Mike

I have worked with that plastic stuff before. It's sort of soft - I suppose that it could work but the bending at the seams will be the end of it pretty fast. Still, if the price is right I think it's a good idea. Not real sure about putting us 200 pounders in that. I would be willing to try. Where would you stow it? A rubber inflatable is easy to stow in our under berth comparments - not so sure about that - but it would be nice to fold up the dingy and take it with you when you get on land.

Personally I like the Kodiac 7.5 Inflatable Dingy with high pressure floor and keel and rows excellent with my 230 lbs.
Easy to inflate carries 2 very heavy persons, easy to get on and off boat, 9inchesx 24 inchesx 3ft length stored.
Can semi plane with me on it with 2.5 Suzuki.(6-8 mph), maybe faster, need to bring gps next time out on the dink.
Semi Plane is like the 50hp on the MacX doing 3/4 throttle at 13-14mph.
With 2 overweight it is harder to row against stronger wind/current, but thats what the motor is for.
Light weight and easy to tow with no notice of drag.

Yup, the old rubber duck is all I know but I must admit that on a crowded weekend at avalon it's sort of scary to leave the dingy tied up at the dingy dock with 50 other ones hanging there. I have never had it happen but I do worry that I will lose a good dingy - and with a motor on it? I dunno.

I guess that is why the little kayak would be nice - because it's easy to row - little drag (motor not needed) and you can take it with you on shore.

Another really great thing is that 'Hobie Mirage Drive' - I have seen that thing in action and it has more torque than a 10 HP outboard! If you put one of those things on a rubber boat you would never need a motor. If Hobie made an inflatable with the "Mirage Drive" I would probably get that one, but I do not think such a thing exists.

Bought mine used, paid $300 and was used previous owner 2 times, like new. In a Dock place I would row if worried about my dink and motor, both are chain locked to dink and dock.
Stay away from the liveaboards on anchorage in provity areas, worse yet the cruisers passing thru on low budget looking for a newer dink.
