Sunbrella Fabric

Post by Mikex »

Hi everyone,
We have the Blue Water Yacht's Dodger/Bimini in Sunbrella Black, and we are wanting to fabricate a few extras for our 26X, and wondered if anyone has a good website to buy the waterproof Sunbrella material from?
Much appreciated!

Thanks Dave,
Will check out this site. Still trying to figure out how much we need: making a wheel & BBQ covers, winch covers, and main sail lazy Jack system..
Time to start sewing!

Mike & Lise,

Make a template out of brown paper.

For the smaller items you can use brown paper shopping bags, they work well. For the larger items you may need larger sheets, such as a roll of brown paper. You may be able to get that at a craft store. After you make the templates, take them to whomever is going to make these items for you. They should be the ones who come up with the amount of fabric you will need.

Mikex,
I bought the sailrite kit for the mainsail stack pack and we are very happy with it. The DVD has all the information you need to measure and build it. Make sure that you have a good sewing machine. We ended up getting the sailrite machine as you have to go over several layers of Sunbrella. You will have enough material for winch covers (just get the inside line). Not sure what type of BBQ you have, but you might better off getting a cover from WM if going for black color.

We get all of ours from Sailrite. The prices look high as they have to list the full retail price. Put the fabric in the cart and then look and the price will go down to their selling price.

For instance we use the 60 inch wide Ocean Blue....

http://www.sailrite.com/Sunbrella-6079- ... an-Blue-60

....which shows as $24.95 a yard but in the cart shows as $18.95. The 46 inch wide is $15.95 a yard.

I think they just had to start doing this last year. They are still as cheap as or cheaper than anyone else we have found and have great service,

Thanks everyone for your great replies,
What great pictures Sea Wind! Thanks for posting. Yes we have been looking at the kit as well and will likely get that one. One concern though is their black is not the same colour code as our Sunbrella Dodger/Bimini, so will likely give them a call. Also our beam measures 11ft, so We are assuming we'd have to order the 13 ft kit, (as the choice is between 10 and 13). Wondering if that affects the length of the zip as well?
Nice going on the purchase of the sewing machine! We have a Pfaff and it is pretty good, but for the extra thick stuff might have to take it to our local sailmaker if need be. We have sewn into thick leather and such so will see... Good to know as well that the DVD is worth getting.
Yes Sum we have been looking at this website. Good to know that the price is reduced upon checkout. And they have the black that we need to match the Dodger/Bimini. Wondering how long it will take to reach us in BC (Canada)...
Great info everyone!

the DVD comes with the kit. Get the 10' kit. There is enough material including the zipper. We called sailrite when we had the same question and that is what they recommended

This is the kit. Since I had to look it up, I might as well post it for convenience (and so I can find it again :D ). My original sail cover is pretty shot - full of holes, and not worth messing with any more, so I was going to make a new one this summer anyway.

I wonder how that would work with a loose-footed main?

We use a loose footed main on the Mac with the sailpack...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner ... vas-9.html

...we made with no problems but the bottom of the sailpack has slugs in it. You might have to modify the sailrite plans and put slugs at the bottom of the sailpack for the loose footed main. We really like the sailpack for the Mac, but it is more complicated to make vs. the sailrite one.

When we made the sailpack for the Endeavour we pretty much followed sailrite's plans...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner ... index.html

...but modified them in a couple areas that I think made it better in our case. One problem with the Endeavour vs. the Mac is that ....

Image

...the slugs pile quite high and we didn't want the sailpack that high at the front tapering to the back so made the sailpack in 2 parts...

Image

....to take care of that. When out for the day we will just remove the top part. If you have a mast gate on the Mac that isn't a problem.

The combination of the sailpack and lazy-jacks sure is much better than flaking the sail and tying it off or using a sail cover. It also makes reefing much faster and easier. A great mod,

Sum
