Insurance

Post by dlandersson »

Has anyone ever compared or know someone who compares boat insurance? :(

My current policy (a Shelter add-on) is $133

Boat US is about $240

- but I don't know if my butt is hanging out with my current insurance. :?

Now - and this is just me - with SF having such low CS ratings (all things being equal), I'd move to BUSA in a heartbeat. And I'm tempted to move anyway - simply because having inexpensive lousy insurance is not really saving money. 8)

This may not be of much value to you as I'm in Canada, which is probably much different than USA, and on top, I'm in Québec, which is often much different than the rest of Canada (but that's a whole other story  .

We pay $168 with $500 deductible. It includes $2million liability and replacement value of 15% more than the purchase price of the boat. It's divided into the 3 main components: boat/hull, motor and trailer. So if you bought it at $10k, you need to split up the values of each component within that $10k. The insurance co won't go beyond 15% of whatever you paid, which is a bit odd.

I have a sister-in-law who is now an insurance broker, so I'm having her look over our policies and may switch.

In South Florida (where we can sail year round provided we have no fear of lightning in the summer) I pay $80/month for full coverage on my 2008 M. I would need to check my deductible, but I think I got the standard policy they offered me.
I remember when I first bought the boat I asked Progressive (my car insurance company) how much to add the boat and they wanted a ridiculous amount (around $300/month!)....I attributed it to them not realizing it was a sailboat vs a "powerboat" and that they specialize in auto insurance (not boat insurance). At any rate I'm happy to have my boat covered for just $80/month. My rate hasn't changed in 5 years either.

I REALLY need to go over my boat insurance. It appears that $11 bucks a month is not nearly enough. :?

I have hull and contents plus liability and whatever else I need to satisfy the bank, for around 800 a year. I think my deductible is 500.00 this also included hurricane haulout deductable at 50 percent but I keep the boat on its trailer because I don't want such a light boat on stands.
s.Florida Is hull to insure pretty much anything.

The lizard had another policy for a 32 grand replacement for only 154 per year that was pretty good too - (lots of medical and liability) I got the higher value 40 grand but got the yearly payment to 200 by increasing the deductable to 1000.

The california rates are pretty good because the weather is rather mild and wimpy.
