My last boat had a Beckson inward opening port in the cockpit, like what you're describing, but it was mounted a bit higher so I never caught a shoe or otherwise even was aware of its presence. I got lucky one day at a West Marine store that was closing and clearing stuff out for cheap, and found a louvered screen unit that replaces the existing bug screen. I was able to leave the port open all summer without rain getting in. BIG help in ventilation, for sure. Made that stern berth livable in hot weather when I opened the other port in that berth (which had a door, so it could get stuffy fast without open ports), which opened to the outside (well above the rub rail).

It's a little hard to tell in this pic, but it's a pair of louvers, open at the bottom, with a screen behind it. I got it for something like $5, and they list for around $60. Pure, dumb luck, a la right place at the right time, and it happened to be the right size.

I think adding one or two of those ports in the cockpit is a good idea, but I'm concerned about the gas tanks being right next to them.

I just bought two of them @ the TO boat show 4x14 i was thinking of installing them into the top large windows as seen here
http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab1/ ... d91996.jpg

But I have now decided to follow Ray's Mod & install them in the same location as his "Niceaft" only I will locate them a little further aft so as not to interfere with the lower window black stripe as seen here
http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab1/ ... 74144e.jpg

here's an inside view just to give u some Idea what they will be located from the inside

I am trying to figure how to get an antenna cable up to the mast support and could not find or see how to route it to date then I spot what you have done. Is the foam filled compartment open at the bottom? You have great photos but not this detail. Can you advise? ...
I never wanted to cut external holes in my boat so I access everything from the "underside". The entire AFT section of the boat is really easy to get to (my experience is only with the :macm: ). I made cut outs in the far aft section ceiling area, and replaced them with plywood covers. You cannot see these in the finished boat but when you pull out all the bed sheets and mattress pads, crawl back and look up, there’s just enough space to remove the panel covers and work back there. I installed my water lines, fuel lines, and propane there and used the access to mount my hot water heater and stern rail seats all from the underside so there are no external openings in the boat. Here is a link to that modification: http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/in ... ?view=1553

I installed a large deck plate on both sides of the aft eng compartment area this aloud me to remove floation for installing stuff & replace it i was finished

I also installed 6" deck plates that were the exact colour match of the inside liner right in the back of the aft berth area aft corners this allowed me to get lots of access for installing all kinds of stuff

Sure does. I thought I had seen all photos you posted but missed most of these. I like the idea of the underside access ports you cut. Given I want to add shower and water fill point at the rear and tidy up the fuel lines this is probably the way to go. Basically I will be adding things that do not add significant weight at this stage.
Thanks again.

Were the seats MADE for the :macx: ?

My impression is that stern rail seats for the :macx: and :macm: have different measurements.
DaveC426913 wrote:Whoever installed the stern party seats on my Seasaw butchered the job. Over the two 3" holes inside the cockpit coaming they've put 4" square acrylic plates, secured with big ugly screws and sealed with hideous caulking that's peeling. At least they beveled the edges on the 1/8" acrylic.

I'd like to replace them with something a little more aesthetic. I'm thinking of round panels but I need to figure out how to secure them. At first I thought simple caulking would be enough but these holes do actually go into the hull, so they are part of the integrity of the hull (even though they're way up at the gunwale). Still, I want to ensure they're not a watertightness weak point.

Any way to screw them in without ugly screw heads? Would liquid steel work?

How do *yours* look?

By chance I happened across a photo of the factory installed stern berth port that opens to the cockpit on an H340. It's not mine, but it's just like it. The port is supposed to be trimmed to be flush to the trim ring at installation. That should prevent catching a shoe on it, for the most part. The one in the pic is a 'rain drain' model, with drain slots for installation up to 45 deg. off vertical, but the standard 'self draining' model is good to 15 deg. without holding water at the gasket, which would fall on you when you open it, and should be fine.

I think I'm going to put one of these in my :macx: as there just isn't enough air flow in there to stay minty-fresh. The louver isn't cheap, but it allows it to stay open all the time, so I think it will be worth it.

Those square, sharp-edged acrylic things glued on with non-UV resistant seal smeared all over my beautiful cockpit coaming. When I went to take them off, they were so brittle they shattered.
