I've got that Timex watch. We've just spent 2 weeks on the 26x in Abel Tasman National Park and the tide function was invaluable. We were sailing from estuary to estuary where we were on the bottom except for a few hours around high tide.

The temperature is good if you want your wrist's temperature and the I've haven't been able to get the compass to work down under (must be some calibration that I'm missing). Unfortunately the dial is fogging and it's just a press-on back so I guess you get what you pay for.

What I would like to have for a cruising watch would be just be tide and possibly moon phase (to calculate rising/falling) tides.

Cheers

Thanks Captain Bob, I'm still torn on the size of the screen and the touch function. Does touchscreen on a rolling deck work okay? I guess if your sitting it does not matter?

I have a 2 watches from Reactor: The Graviton & the Graviton 2.

The tide info of the original Graviton will be useless after 2015 :P
& I found myself in an Ebay quandary which left me in the useful predicament of upgrading to a Graviton 2 - at a $120 discount :)

I love them both. The Graviton 2 is a big hunk a watch - buyer beware. But a tough, very useful mantle of masculinity & time/tide keeping

Before these ridiculous purchases I used a SS BAND Casio G Shock. Something along the line of this.
But damned if 3 of them haven't dropped off my wrist and deep into the drink from getting banged around and then the pin slipped :x

Plus I have a Garmin chartplotter & All of the iGadgets
-But my watch stays on ALL OF THE TIME 8)

Sailing Watches are something you get for Christmas or other occasion, not really something to go out and buy. Garmin does put out some nice watches Bob, I have looked at them on their internet site. I suppose Casio does too and I have seen a couple good Timex versions but they are geared more to sports enthusiasts but can apply to sailing. Suunto makes sailing specific watches too, one called a Yachtsman and another I cannot remember but they are expensive and are something you might want on your santa list for your wife. I am still looking for the perfect sailing watch, just another sailors toy I would like. :D

We went on a cruise just before christmas and bought one for my son who liked it and another for future. For 20 bucks including a ipod case, a pen and a watch that looks neat it still is a good deal. No, not water proof and not all dials working but where can you find a watch that looks so great and at least works?

I had a friend give me a pilots watch that has all the dials that work and solar charges. Similiar to this: http://www.click-a-watch.com/best_price ... 40-58l.gif Military time, Duel time and press a button and the hands move by themselves to the time listed in the digital display. Titanium band and all that. It is a Blue angels Eco watch In darkness the hands stop moving and when exposed to light they move and catch up. Pretty cool waterproof watch. but I would appreciate any gift big or small, it is the thought that matters. I'm pretty sure you could fix the band and still hopefully enjoy it. I don't wear mine as much because I am always welding or working in ways which would damage it. A cheap watch that looks good for daily wear, not to worry about is something nice to have.

When I used those dials for flying and I showed others they said they couldn't read that small. A couple years later and now vision has changed and bifocal stuff. RRRRR I know what they mean. When it happens you'll know what I mean. Hey - maybe you don't NEED the dials to move.... Good winds.... jtm
