I keep mine online as well.

SV LAIKA Seasonal Deck Log

A custom setup using free software tailoring it to suite my needs.

A quick view of the season tells me how much I haven't sailed :(

One can drill down further onto date for data on a particular trip.

Photo's I share elsewhere to a broader audience.

I mean other than myself or the Admiral, who really wants to read it unless they want specific data to cruise that region?
It's a personal thing.

Works for me.

Nope. We're going to a destination wedding at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya, Playa del carmen, Mexico. There isn't any reason to leave the property. Maybe I should bring my logbook along. Image

I thought you were going to the west coast (mexican riviera). We're gonna be in that area for feb and part of march. Playa DC has a pretty good sailing schools. I was planning to check it out on the way through, and when I find the time (if ever) I was gonna look up some and get pricing. To be able to rent or just get out on those turquoise blue waters for an afternoon of sailing... :)

Stephen,

Yeah, haven't posted much lately and actually just changed my profile when I posted this. I've been out in CA for about 1.5 years, lost the job in Atlanta in 2009. Nice to be sailing in the ocean again. Now the Seven C's has actually sailed in 2 of them :D.

Hmm, that photobucket story format seems a bit vertically challenged! Ie, it is all running horizontally.

I started doing logs a couple years ago for just a few of my more exceptional (and new) trips. Ie, I don't do them on my routine trips so most of the time I don't do them. I patterned these after a friend of mine who sails a Jenneau around the Med every summer and also has crossed the Atlantic before. I liked his format and so borrowed it and started using it. He has a website so packed with these logs, it could take you years to go through them all.

The 3 logs I've done so far are my 250 mile solo roundtrip cruise from North Tampa down to Pelican Bay in 2010, my trip to the upper Keys in late 2011 (New Year's Cruise) and last month, my solo trailer cruise up to Pensacola Bay and Santa Rosa Sound. Since I don't have a public web site, I keep these on my Yahoo group:

I started a log book 11 years ago when I bought my first Mac. Some of the sailing excursions were relatively mild, others contained tales of stupidity and wild excitement regarding captain and crew and the many lessons learned. I often had a camera and took pictures.
This year I bought an IPad. I have managed to:
- convert my separate word documents to one larger file.
- each sailing had its own date and title. That line is formatted as a heading (H1)
- add a table of contents (using LibreOffice)(it uses the headings for a TOC)
- convert that one larger word doc into a PDF format (save in PDF format)
- the table of contents becomes hyperlinks in PDF file (!)
- add .jpeg pictures to the larger file
- save the PDF file allowing for smaller sizes of the .jpegs
- split the file into two files because of size limitations
- keep the captains log on the IPad
- the log is now available for captain or crew

How did I manage to keep a log going? Like emptying the porta potti and removing garbage, a trip was not finished until the log had been entered.

$6 for the iPad. Seems to have everything I could think of for a log book app. Same author also has a free app in the iTunes store for the iPhone.
