Hatch and companionway replacement molding

Post by tessmar »

I'm working on the interior of my V21...designing storage shelves and redoing wiring, etc. The push-on trim around the companionway opening and hatch are pretty worn out and I would like to replace it. From my years with cars I seem to recall seeing this tuff in restoration catalogs but have not been able to find anything (seems everyone now has stuff organized by vehicle rather than allowing you to just search the particular product). I did find this site and am pretty sure this stuff will work, but I'm wondering if anyone else has found a source for more original looking material?

Thanks

I think this may be closer to what you're looking for, and very likely it was what was used when the boat was new:

http://www.beckson.com/trim.html

It comes in white or black and two sizes - 1/8" or 1/4":

I just checked out the price on the Beckson molding. Unfortunately it is only available in 100' rolls. $160 is a bit  steep. The Custom Auto Trim product is $2.25 a foot with a ten foot minimum. I haven't measured but I'm guessing I wouldn't need more than abut 16 feet...less than $40. Might not be an OEM match,but...at this point there is so much else to do on the boat I'll likely either deal with keeping the existing trim for now or putting on the Auto trim product and putting the extra $120 into the other things I've got penciled in...lighting, paint, shelving units, etc.
The boat is not really shabby visually but just a bit tired and in need of some effective cabin organization.

Contact Beckson and see who they wholesale it to... you can probably get smaller segments from vendors like We$t Marine and others.

Or, use eBay... here's a company selling it by the foot, and for only $1.90/ft... that's only $0.30 more than Beckson wants, and you can purchase only what you need...
