The MacGregor Yacht Corporation - A Perfect Business Model?

Post by Mark Prouty »

Is the MacGregor Yacht Corporation a perfect business model.
In sum, most, if not all, new businesses start with someone motivated by self-interest being alert to some problem that others face. A new business then requires someone with imagination, ability, and courage to follow through with practical solutions to that problem. This was precisely the case with Roger and Mary Lou MacGregors business.

The MacGregors believed that the retractable keel feature of their boat made it a better boat than the competitions. They sought to cut costs, and thus to cut the selling prices of their boats, through the application of assembly line techniques and the standardization of parts in the fabrication of their sailboats. Neither the assembly line process nor the standardization of parts is new, of course. But the MacGregors made a new application of these familiar techniques, for historically the cruising sailboat manufacturing business has been a custom work business.
I not in a position to be an authority but I'd say that the MacGregor Yacht Corporation is pretty close to the perfect business model. They fulfilled a need and with thier own money, courage and imagination and built an exceptionally* profitable business.

Some things that might have improved along the way:

*Closer attention to quality.
*Cut costs a little too much - trailers for example.
*Produce more than one boat line simultaneously.

However, the object to produce boats as cheaply as possible and therefore as profitable as possible was acomplished.

Regardless, your sure have to admire Roger. Even though he pi$$ some off at times. :x

* I think it is exceptionally profitable

Thanks for posting this mark. I know what it's like to start a small business with a handful of credit cards, as I'm sure a few others on this board do. It seems so hard to start a mom and pop shop in the U.S. but, I'm told that it's worse in Europe? The protections required by law are a heavy burden when all you have is an idea, and some enthusiasm. Roger built something based on helping folks have good clean fun, and providing some interesting work for Macgegor's work associates. That's earns pretty high marks with me.

I can support Mac's business strategy and success, for I now have one of his products laying in my driveway 8) :D .

First of all, we're sailors (one would conclude) and we're obviously impressed with his product sufficiently to buy one. Secondly, I can't think of a cooler product than a sailboat. Third - as for the quality, balancing quantity with quality is a never ending battle. Too much quality and you can't sell enough units to stay in business; to little quality you can't sell enough units to stay in business.

After seeing this beautiful blue boat in my yard behind my blue jeep wrangler (yes, they had to match - not) I must say, the Mac is a fine mono hul version of the Hobie Cat. She's nothing close to the Fat Cat 38 you've heard me rave about - but I spent 1/3rd for the Mac - I didn't have to go to Seattle to get one - didn't have to pay $6,000 to ship it here - don't have to pay $400 a month to park her, yadda, yadda, yadda.

All in all - Mac should be proud of himself. I am envious and wonder why when I was doing my Masters' thesis I didn't do on on FEDX, or MacGregor Sailboats. I did mine on Perception and Learning Threory. :P

I can tell you why you see things the way you do. . . but that's not nearly as cool as these little boats!!!

There's plenty of quality issues I see not to my standards. But, if they were, would the boat have cost me another $10,000? If so, I wouldn't have one.

By the way, on the drive home yesterday from Mobile, once we were in P'cola, a fine gent screamed out of his car, 'That's the NEW MACGREGGOR??!!! We stopped at the light and chatted. He was real excited; he's getting one, and his neighbor is getting one tomorrow.

Guess Roger's dream is functioning well, eh?

mtc, I've tried PM you and a few others on what the situation is with the Escambia Bay bridge (I-10). I'm lugging the Mac over early next week. Glad Rodger kept it as 'light' as he did without weighing it down with 'refinements'.
