Maine Coast

Post by The-strikes »

Next summer we would like to spend a week off Maine - Between Monhegan Island and Acadia. Two adults, and two teens on my :macx: . Just looking for somebody who can recommend a launch point and possible itinerary. I know nothing about the area. Trailering out from upstate NY. Shore power once or twice, moorings. Looking to do a little swimming, hiking, and visit some small ports. How's that for vague?

You could launch at Broad Cove Marine in Bremen. Park and store vehicle and trailer there. Spend time exploring Muscongus Bay (one of my favorites) and out to Monhegan when conditions are favorable. Or turn the corner at Marshall Point and head up Penobscot Bay towards Rockland-Camden, Owls Head etc. Cross the bay to Vanalhaven, Services in Carver's Harbor. Cross the East Side of Penobscot Bay toward Castine or Stonington. Stonington archepelago is one of the favorite Maine Cruising grounds. Several boatyards there. Maybe go ashore at Old Quarry Campground for showers etc. South of Stonington, sail around Isle Au Haut and continue east to Swan's Island, from there North Across Bass Harbor Straight (can be rough) to Mt. Desert Island. Again lots of marine services here. thisis a pretty long trip if you are going to explore and not just shoot past. How long are you going to be here?

Yes it will be. Think of trying to swim in Lake George in early June. If you're a polar bear, your fine. :D

I hope to be in Lake George again next August for two weeks. We skipped it this year for the Olympics. I'm hoping to meet up with fellow Mac owners Rick & Marge, Jim & Mary, and now "The-Strikes".

You may want to consider Moosehead Lake (Maine) in the future. Desolate and 40 miles in length, I googled a motel located in Greenville, ME (on the shores of Moosehead) for $100 a night which included a dock for your boat. We hope to travel there next year. Imagine drifting and searching with your binoculars for moose and black bear while taking in the spectacular scenery.

The-strikes:

As for sailing Downeast, I've made four cruises about Penobscot Bay and have always launched from the Rockland Public Boat Ramp. I've anchored at Pulpit Harbor, Perry Creek, Fox Island Thorofare, McGlathery Island, Russ Island, & Swans Island. One could depart Rockland and sail / motor nonstop to Southwest Harbor in one day, however, the hardest part would be trying to resist succumbing to the urge to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the area... that is if the lobster pots don't getcha first!

I can detail some of my experiences if you desire, and I'll post a link to my album of a previous trip. As Cat said, I do a bit of sailing on Casco Bay as well.

Dreamcatcher:
Thanks for the heads up on Broad Cove Marine in Bremen. I've been looking for reasonable access to that part of the mid-coast.
P.S> The water will be colder than you are used to.
The warmest Maine water I've experienced swimming: 60*F-65*F, usually in tidal anchorages 15' deep or so. 65* water on a 95*+ air day is quite SHOCKING!, but refreshing! Cocktail Cove at Jewell Island is a great place to hang out in the water on a warm day.

WASP18:
Long ago, I read an account of a Mac cruising on Moosehead... that would be a great venue.

The Admiral & I have talked about doing a weeklong Acadia / MDI cruise. The original plan was to trailer to then launch at Southwest Harbor. I think a better venue would be a Penobscot crossing from Rockland. Summer '13 just might be the time!
