Ballast tank

Post by skipperpaul88 »

Hi everybody!

I recently sold my Hunter 28 which I had up in the San Juan Islands. I could not justify keeping the Hunter for the amount of time I have been able to utilize it.

I have researched boats that would fit my present needs and my family's changing wants. The boat I have finally settled on is the MacGregor 26X :macx: . I found and purchased a very "box stock" 2002 with a 2004 Tohatsu DI engine. It seems to be in very good condition as the PO was primarily a day sailor with few needs.

I am very much a "cruising trailer sailor" and need to make lots of Mods to make this boat fill my needs. I really appreciate this forum and vast knowledge that it contains. Having been a former owner of a 89 D which I also outfitted for extended cruising. I will contribute to the forum when I can help.

Now, to the subject that I am posting about: I am drilling lots of holes and cutting in areas to mount electronics, tanks, and other needed upgrades. I really need an exact schematic or drawing on the location of the ballast tank from one end of the boat to the other. I have a pretty good idea of where most of it is, but I am getting a little nervous at times particularly when running wires and setting the depth finder transponder to shoot through the hull in where I hope is the right spot.

I have also read (in the forum) lots of comments about the stock steering system. Does anyone out there know how I can identify which steering system I have on my boat, how to lubricate and maintain it if it is an acceptable system, or the best and least costly replacement.

Thank you for your knowledge and experience that you all share.

Adding a Baystar hydraulic system is only about $500 if you want to go hydraulic. Search this site.

The 2002 has SS rudder brackets and generally none of the problems of the 1990s boats...I would leave it as is if the steering turns smoothly with no bumps or stiff spots, turned lock to lock..

Welcome aboard!
