Another new owner

Post by Kevgrn114 »

I drove down to Houston to look at a nice 1999 X. The owner is very nice! The price is fair, motor still has 1 yr of warranty left!! We took it out into the bay, winds were about 10-15. The boat handles nice! Went reasonably fast, 6-7mph, pointed a lot better than led to believe from comments. Powered fast, 23mph.
The boat is dauntingly huge when next to it but is easily handled at the docks edge. Wow! This thing is light. :-) I hooked it up to my wrangle 4dr and towed it around the boat yard to see how bad it bogged my jeep down. It was light on the tounge weight and pulled very easily. Tandem axle trailer..

I put some money down while I gather my finances and should be taking posession by mid August!!!!

FINALLY!!! after drooling over these things since 95... Woohoo!!

It's a 2010 tohatsu 50 tldi. 30 hrs on it. Speed was read by depth finder with paddle wheel on the transom.
One person sitting on the bow really helps keep the nose down and may have helped the overall planing efficiency.

Well , your Speedo is wayyyyyyyyyy off. That's no big deal deal.... Whats important is you found a boat you like and you are for now happy with the speed she could produce.. Congratulations on the Boat and Welcome to the board 8)

Those paddle-wheel speedos need to be calibrated, just so you know. Use a GPS in calm water on a no-wind day, and take an average of two runs in opposite directions in otherwise identical conditions to get an accurate speed, and calibrate the unit with a scale factor you input yourself. Try it again, and see if it agrees.

I can't see that kind of speed with anyone's 50 hp on an :macx: , even with clean, shiny hull. I figured you have a 90 hp on there, or maybe a 70 at least.

Congrats -and set aside some $$$ for the pizza. 8)

FYI, unless the owner waxed the (white) hull with slick 50 or something, 23mph is a bit hard to accept.

Oh! You've never heard of the slick 50 trick?! I'll have to test it with gps next time and see what the speed is. We could have been running against current in the bay or something.

Congrats and start making a list of toys to buy for it.

Yea, the speedo is wrong. That speed through the water is not possible with a 50hp. And as mentioned above, doesn't matter. What matter is you have a boat and will enjoy it.

....back to my need for speed mantra..Boating gedanken ........

Instead of my 8k 50 HP, buy a 9.9 for the :macx: , and a Boston Whaler 17 used with a 30-50 HP used for Hudson river 45 mph boating....

The 9.9 can be removed and resold as a kicker for 80% of value....As can the BW at right time if season

I will have to look into calibrating it.. I thought that was too high just from reading this forum, but I also was liking the idea of having the ONLY magical 50hp on the planet. :-)
I have been looking through all of the mods listed here and definitely see some that I will do.
I'm excited to have a blank canvas from which to work and make it my own creation.

I'm planning on taking it to the Texas 200 next year. I went this year on my little sunbird and loved it, but the whole time I kept hearing in the back of my mind.. "This would be so awesome on the Mac!" :-)

You guys should look into it if your interested. A great bunch of people and a fun trip!
