file compression for posting mods

I'd like to share a few mods, but all my jpegs are over a meg. What format will show up best on Mac mods?

You can just save them at lower resolution of course.

Depending on screen and OS you can't even see the pixels in your pictures do the size is wasted indeed

downlaod a program called "gimp2" it is a great image editing progem, when you export - you can verry the JPG compression ratio, to get what ever file size you need. I would tend to keep resolution highish, and more JPG compression.

I use http://www.tinypic.com to host my pics (no sign-up, no account, no record keeping), and just upload 1-2 MB pics to that site. I can choose different sizes at upload (you have to upload to a pic hosting site anyway), or if I choose nothing, they come out at about 75 kB anyway.

On my computer, it's 1.01 MB, but on tinypic, it's only 76 kB. This site generates large thumbnails (like the one above) anyway, so if someone with dialup doesn't want to have their machine slowed down by pic loading, it only has to load the thumbnails, and the user can choose to look at the full-sized pic or not, which is a real nice feature they have here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like when you upload a photo for a mod, it uploads directly from the user's computer to the macgregorsailors.com server. You don't have to supply a link to photobucket or some other web server as you would for a normal post.
If that's the case, then file compression could help. But server space must be limited, right?

I am using a free SW IrfanView. When I need a quick touch it is a great tool.
It is small and does many basic photo editing among others resizing, rotates, screen capture, ...
for resizing:
Image
resize/resample
Select "set new size" I use 600x600, preserve aspect ratio - this is one setting for portraits and landscapes
Last you save the processed image.

Another useful set of features I found are enabled through “Edit” “show paint dialog”. This will enable cloning, text, arrows, … over the original picture.

You are correct, it is uploaded directly from your computer and archived on the website's server. I think that the question comes from the fact that pictures to be uploaded must be 640 X 480 and 1 meg, or less in size.

I used to use Irfanview all the time, and liked it a lot. Good price, too. The MS Office that I got with my new machine has MS Office Picture Manager, which has some basic editing tools (crop, resize, etc.), so I've never bothered to look further. Paint is clumsy for arrows and annotations, so I rarely use it. Maybe it's time to try Irfanview again. I just hate to put more programs on my machine than I absolutely need.
