Problem with throttle/shift cable. Need advice

Post by BNG »

I have a 2002 mac 26x with Nissan 50 2cycle. The mechanic replaced the original cables that were in bad shape. The mechanic said a new problem is presented itself. You can only raise the engine halfway before the cable kinks or binds. This can only result in premature failure. Is this a common issue or are we overlooking something?

Thanks

Did this "mechanic" leave enough extra cable coiled in front of the motor? There has to be sufficient slack, or they will kink.

Our cables come thru the starboard bulkhead.
Here they are with the engine up.

Here they are with the engine down.

Lots of options.

Thats a good question. Maybe the mechanic has it too tight. My cables come in on the starboard side as well . I havent seen it yet, but I will suggest leaving some extra by the engine.

I had the same problem with my old Nissan 30, and there was no possibility to avoid it, and I was changing throttle and shifting cable every few years. Cable mount on the engine was such that no slack or way you coil them could help. The only thing you can do is to choose the most flexible cable and I forgot what use last time, but I remember they were more expensive. It was worth paying more for less pain to change them. With new TLDI 50 this problem is solved as the mounting for cables at the engine is better. There is no sharp bends when the engine is up.

I thought I had some pics of my own, but I don't at present. Your cable is radiused WAY TOO TIGHT! My setup has a big loop crossed over itself before exiting the motor well. If yours has been run like this for a long period of time it has likely worn through the inner sleeve and will never be as good as new. Try to see if you have enough excess inside the hull to feed back into the well and provide you with a much larger bend in the cable. Otherwise I would obtain a longer new replacement morse cable to do the job properly.
